New tail lights need to be coded to the car?

I have a new tail light coming in for my car, that i purchased off Ebay. was told by someone that the tail light will need to be coded to the car? does that make sense?

I replaced my 2008 GT Speed right rear without any issues about 2yrs ago. Plug and play.

thank you, how easy was it? remove 3-4 screws and done? torx screws?
