Just a random picture

With life getting in the way, I took the time to give her a bath. With her sitting for about a yr (scared to drive because of that vacuum leak), she had a nice layer of dust on her so I had to show her some love.

Side note: looking to get that damn vacuum leak fixed next month.

Looks like you have 2008 or newer. You should be able to take care of that leak without removing the engine. Depending on where it is (almost certainly behind the steering rack) you may even be able to DIY bypass that awful steering rack line like I did and save yourself thousands.

Its a 2006 BUT I don’t have the line over the trans. I’m pretty good with my hands and tools but for some reason I’m not too keen with tackling that job.

Can you or someone on here give me a direction to go in as I’m looking to buy a smoke machine. Nothing too fancy. I want to take some videos to post on here if I tackle this job myself as to give everyone a look at what I see so I can get direct info to you all that’s willing to help.

J G is in Bridgeport CT right now doing a 2015 W12 cylinder head with burnt valves...
Then he is off to LI to work on a B from Florida, then back to NC in about 2 weeks, I told him of your needs, and I will call you tomorrow or Saturday, if you are available.

I never purchased a smoke machine, because right when I purchased my rebuild GT and started the tear down, I saw the information here on 6Speed and then also met Jason whom informed me of the issues with all the lines along the firewall behind the steering rack, so I just did everything, as it all had cracks...

Now on my rebuild thread post number 236, a fellow member here made a homemade smoke machine/bong.. no really, a smoke machine.

I have video of the whole job, I just haven't gotten around it editing it yet!

A smoke machine is a necessary tool. I purchased the AutoLine Pro model. It is $120 and I used it for this plus an Evap leak.

Been so busy with work family and a new car project (CL 63 AMG to compliment my Continental). I'll see if I can get to it this weekend or at least demonstrate what I did. It's fairly simple. You need copper tubing (8mm), hydraulic hose connectors for 8mm size hoses, some metal zip-ties. Depending on where your leak is, I needed a hand saw to reach in and cut the steering rack line so I could cap it. That was honestly the hardest part.

The only issue I had was that my vacuum pump would turn on when I accelerated, oddly enough. Possibly from the turbo solenoids which I believe are vacuum powered? I went with the assumption that since I had lengthened the system with my bypass, there was less overall pressure in it. So I cut off the system that went to the canister and valves. I like the open valve sound anyway. I do get an CEL now and then (every 500 miles? I can't tell exactly) because my EVAP canister is vacuum powered and can't purge. I just clear that for now- in the future I may splice the system between that an the exhaust valve and see if that solves the issue for good. It's not my only car I'm clearing CEL EVAP codes on. If the engine runs good, I'm good.

But it's been.. 10 months now and I haven't heard that wretched vacuum pump buzzing once since. The car brakes better (vacuum booster), turbos kick harder, and revs at a lovely smooth 500rpm.

Funny: I hated the whine so much I spent $600 on a new vacuum pump. New one is almost as loud as the last one. Part of it is that the car is so quiet, the fact there is a motorized pump bolted to the metal means the noise gets transmitted, but I really, really hate the noise. It's pretty much the only thing I don't like about the car. Well, that and the door closing, I wish my car had a soft door close, I cannot stand how everyone slams the door so hard. Oh, and I would mildly like the trunk to open automatically instead of just unlocking, but that isn't a big deal.

FWIW: The tubo solenoids essentially the (2) n75's (VAG general term) are positive (p) boost activated.

The EVAP canister system test cycle involves a dedicated positive pressure pump to pressurize the system. Than vacuum is applied to an integrated valve testing the systems air tightness. This is a very generalized explanation to my best ability.

Anyway if the vacume pump runs while accelerating and within a few miles stops this behvior this may be normal. My B cycles as stated only on cold start drives, that is my story.😎
