Just bought an 05 GT with problems. Help!

Hi there. Hoping for some help. I just purchased an 05 GT from out of state. It arrived with very bad shifting and hesitating after shifting. The check engine light came on and EPC light. It also has a loud whirring sound from under the hood that comes on a lot. Seems like maybe the pump for air suspension. Haven't scanned it yet. Any common issues this might be that i should look out for? Thanks ahead of time.

Hello 355spider,

Yes a common 05MY BGT is leaking vacuum lines. The noise is probably from the auxiliary (left hand front wheel well) vacuum pump. A smoke test will confirm this. An internet search of "Bentley Continental GT vacuum leaks" is useful. There are several YouTube videos regarding this. The vacuum pump will eventually burn out if continually running. The secondary issue is usually lean combustion cycles that cause misfires and flashing trouble codes. Furthermore the vacuum leak can affect traction control with aggressive acceleration. Some of the jerking can be attributed to the ignition system retarding the timing as a result of the lean combustion cycle.

In all fairness without a proper scan of the ECU this is easy chair guesswork.😓

Please do the due diligence and get back to us.

Thanks so much. I dropped it off today at a Bentley mechanic so we'll see. Fingers crossed.

That's a drag to have your new car arrive with so many possible issues.

Yeah no kidding. I'm a member of many high end car forums. If the dealer doesn't fix the issues you will all here from me.

I am curious to know, did you just purchase this vehicle from a dealership, if so, why did you not send it back to them immediately, if a private sale, I would still be on the phone with the seller, as this didn't just happen, it's most likely that the fault codes were cleared prior to delivery, and as another had learned here, do not send the vehicle to any other repair shop, other than the seller, a member here did just that, after emailing the seller, who then later denied all responsibility...

The bill came to 30K. We'll see what the dealership does. I want them to buy it back.

Hello @355spider
Would you please elaborate on the 30K price tag for repairs, because, to be honest, that is just absurd, and sounds like a shop that does not want to be bothered with the job.

You can buy a complete new engine from Bentley for less than that, I was quoted by Manhattan Motorcars and Bentley of Edison between 24K to 27K for a 2005 replacement crate engine a few years back, and the engine would come complete top to bottom, front to back, everything included, meaning, AC, PS, ALT, turbos, intake, TB's, everything, even the serpentine belt...

If your vehicle only needs all the vacuum lines replaced, then that job should run between $5500 and $9000 depending on what else you choose to do while the engine transmission package is out, such as the starter, O2 sensors, etc.

Jason Giannetti does this job with his own lines made of metal, instead of the factory replacements that are still made of plastic, he does this job at around $5500 engine and transmission out.

Sincerely
Johnny

Jason is now in Charlotte NC.

I looked over your estimate, I am sorry, but the prices are absurd, I mean some parts price seem higher than the list price.

@355spider ,
What I also find most troubling, is that there is no mention of any of the vacuum lines being replaced, yet it appears that they are removing the engine, why else charge you for the subframe bolt kit, so they are leaving out the most important item to replace during an engine out service.

Their prices on the air filters is ridiculous, $310 each, when at the dealership the price is $125 each, and there are filter kits much less expensive.

The egt sensors run $467 each, yet he's charging $727 each.

The intercooler goes for $522. yet he quoted $1279.00

The complete engine reinstall kit goes for $607, yet he quotes $1318 for subframe bolts, that are included in the engine reinstall kit.

His price on the headliner, absurd, some here have removed it themselves and had another repair it for around $650 iirc, this guy wants $2385 just to remove it, then another $1122 to recover it in a like material, for a total of $3507 just for the headliner, I say, find another shop..

Johnny
