BruceR is infamous around these parts
The original phone won't work with today's cellular carriers. The original phone was 2G and maybe 3G compatible which are pretty much useless today. I don't know if the '05 has bluetooth but that's how I used my phone with my '09 and now '16 GT.

it is not true, 2g/3g is still in service, just put your sim card in old phone... you just can not use the 4g/lte speeds etc, you run on lower performance connection.

I don't know where you are but most US carriers are in the process of or have phased out 2G/3G service. See: https://bit.ly/3H6wpAE
Outside the US I don't know but would expect the same is true or soon to be true. In fact my alarm company recently sent me a new 4G/5G communicator to replace the the 3G version since 3G will soon be gone. It makes little sense to support 2G/3G equipment and dedicate valuable frequency spectrum to a service that very few people need. If a cell customer can't afford a new phone it's cheaper for the carrier to just give them a new 4G/5G phone to keep their business.
