Trunk lid won't close all the way - right side is high
My 2008 GTC Speed has a trunk lid issue.
When I use the button on the trunk lid to close it now the right side front corner doesn't go all the way down. To get the lid to close I have to push that corner down manually before the electric closing operation is totally completed. If I don't do that the lid opens again since it doesn't lock closed.
I have wiggled the lid when open to see if there is any play in the right side hinges and they seem to be fine. The trunk opens fine electrically.
Anyone have a clue what the problem is?
If the hinge is not defective, what could it be? Is there a motor on both sides of the lid or just one motor involved? If there are two motors I would suspect the motor on the right side.

Seems to me the point of the struts is to hold the lid open and don't have anything to do with closing other than to slow the closing so the lid doesn't slam shut. Not so?
Normally when a strut goes bad it doesn't provide any resistance.
In any case, just to see if you are correct I will remove the strut on the right side and see if that solves the problem.

Well it is definitely not the strut. Taking the strut off the lid won't stay open, as I suspected.
But wiggling the lid again and observing the complicated hinge closely, I now see just a little movement in one pivot point and suspect the nylon bushing there is worn. There is no such movement on the left side.
If that tiny bit of sloppy movement is the cause, my guess is an entire new hinge will be required...plus painting it the correct color. I doubt there is a way to replace the bushing.
Other owners may have not had this problem because they raise and lower their trunk lids infrequently. But I carry my golf gear in there and open-close the lid at least 8 times a week.

Hello @MrVette ,
Have you tried closing the trunk lid by hand a few times, therefore overriding the lift/close motor, it may be that the lift close motor has got out of sync with it's fully opened and fully closed positions, does the lid lift to it's furthest open position on it's own, say within an inch of free play at the top, or does it have more free travel, or none ?
As you say there is no play in the hinge, a reset of the lid motor may be needed, and I forget at this moment how...

MrVette, I believe I have the same problem as you.
I have heard rumours here in Sweden (from sellers at one of Sweden's biggest exclusive car dealerships, for example) that issues with the trunk closing & opening is very common for the first few years of the GT/GTC.
My 2007 doesn't shut the trunk lid all the way when I press the button for it to close. The top right corner (closest to the passenger seat, LHD car) stays about 5 mm from closing flush.
Sometimes it just stays like that, but usually this causes the trunk to raise back up again on its own after a second, and usually when it raises itself back up, it goes back up and then drops all the way down right away. A complete dead drop. (I happened to be bent over in the trunk once when this happened, and let me tell you, that trunk lid has got a bit of weight in it!!) I imagine this particular issue has something to do with the struts, so I have purchased two new ones for that.
The corner sticking up 5 mm I am guessing has to do with rust in the hinges, and it will probably not get solved by just spraying some lubricant. I have tried that. (Although I was never really clear on exactly which lubricant was the most recommended, there were a few different thoughts there..)
When I press the B-button on the outside of the trunk lid to open it, it stops about 3-4 centimeters from opening all of the way up. Is yours the same way? So when the trunk has stopped opening, I can manually raise it about 3-4 more centimeters to reach full height. This, I imagine, is probably also an issue with the struts and/or hinges.
I've got some things to try out and will let you know what I learn!

This is what it looks like when the top right corner (front passenger side) doesn't close all the way.
If I help press it down as the trunk closes, everything is flush and fine. I can also push it down after the trunk has stopped without any problems.

I can't find the old thread, but when I changed the struts after having the same "lift and slam shut" issue, Johnny recommended a lube for the hinges and struts. IIRC, it'd called FluidFilm. It works!

My problem was solved by following the suggestion to manually close the trunk lid a few times rather than use the motor. Apparently the motorized mechanism got out of sync.
It did work fine once I did that. It remains to be seen if it keeps working.
I am certain I don’t have a hinge rust or lube issue.
