Sequential Manual Gearbox

Sequential M Gearbox

From the M5 Owners Manual:

The concept
The SMG Sequential Manual Transmission
with Drivelogic is an automated manual transmission
in which an electrohydraulic system
handles the clutching and gear changes.
The Sequential Manual Transmission is operated
with the selector lever and two shift paddles
on the steering wheel.
It offers you the following functions:

>
Optional manual or automatic operation:

Sequential mode or Drive mode
>

Selection option between different driving

programs, Drivelogic, refer to page 57
>

Upshift display, shift lights, refer to page 58

>

Automatic downshifting and prevention of

incorrect shifting even in Sequential operation

> Automatic double clutching

Review the link www.m3smg.com I think a member left it within this thread. Most of the information you're looking for will be there. The only hamper I have with the SMG system is the ability to launch the car from a standstill. You will be RMP limited and you can only trick the car into slipping the clutch only slightly. From a roll the SMG is brutally consistent and pretty darn fast.

I'm a convert myself...I originally hated the SMG technology without driving one. After the test drive in Germany; I was hooked for life. The convience of an auto-like tranny and the feeling of a true manual are awesome selling points. As many have pointed out, the SMG is herky-jerky in the auto-mode if you attempt to drive it like an auto. You have to be direct with your foot placement on the throttle and learn the cars shift points to optimize the system. This takes time, patience, and ability...something many of us lack whether we choose to admit it or not.

regards,

Naseem

[quote=unvmym3;1403404]Jits , the SMG works great and shifts burtaly fast ! at the time when it came out it was and might still be the fastest one. quote]

correct me if i'm wrong but i believe:

current smg-tranny shifts in 80 miliseconds (on most aggressive setting)

ferrari makes fastest sequential tranny (superfast2 in the 430 scuderia) = 60 milliseconds

The F430 is not the fastest anymore. DSG in the VW/Audi (TT, GTI, R32, R8) applications are now at 8 millisecond shift times.
