I completely agree. The E36 M3 is a good car, but the 993 is significantly better.

I have got to believe that the driving dynamics of the 993 vs. the E36 M are two completely different things. The two vehicles are designed differently, build differently, and need to be driven differently on the track. I would imagine that for the "average" (read, no professional training) car enthusiast that the M would be quicker around the track because it is more forgiving to driving mistakes.

Funny thing is, these cars really aren't "competitors" in the used car market. We are comparing a $10-15k M3 to a $35-45k 993. If you factor in the money equation, an E36 M3 with $20k-$30k in mods is going to be quite a beast, and far and away faster than a stock 993, and just about anything else with a Porsche crest on it. But comparing a modded car to a stock car is a moot point, since there is always something faster for cheaper.
