550i Performance upgrades
#16
Go to www.e60.net, in the parts and mods forum. There are quite a few options for the 550i. Most people start with the cold air intake (AFE makes a good one for a good price) and exhausts, lots of options here as well.
Dinan is bringing out a chip in the fall for the 08 550i.
In addition you can look into some handling mods such as suspension, quite a few options here too.
There may not be as many mods an e46 M# or similar but you can definitely tweak your 550i nicely and get some additional enjoyment out of it.
Have fun!

E39 ///M Power you seem to sound familiar. Are you affiliated with Dinan?
Anyway regardless, can you quantify the costs.
Is stage II price the summation of the components of one and two, correct?
It is big bucks for no hp gains. Not a single hp from any of the E60 M5 mods.
Fact is that this isn't worth talking about.

no, juan, not affiliated with dinan. just providing information, with some editorial comments.
i think we both agree (as would almost everyone out there) that dinan is expensive (if not the most expensive, near the top). i understand people have different opinions about the value associated with dinan mods, but it is my belief that dinan offers well built and well designed products. dinan also offers a matching factory warranty (as i understand it- haven't looked at it in depth), which is a big plus for guys with new cars.
i didn't pay too much attention to the S1 and S2 details- it was strictly a "cut and paste" job from the dinan website. i don't know what the price details are.

Yeah, I've spent countless hundreds of hours on www.e60.net and also have a 550.
No big horsepower mods available, other than doing a software upgrade, although I haven't done it since it would get replaced if the dealer decided to upgrade your software. I'm still debating.
I did get the AFE cold intake, as well as a Remus Quad exhaust which together make the car sound pretty great when you get on the gas.
For seat of the pants faster, get the Sprint Booster which gets rid of the delay between you hitting the gas, and the car actually going.. best mod ever!

That's what I meant.. AFE intake and exhaust gave no HP gains.. just great sounding car
As for the software upgrade, based on talking to other e60 folks and a dynos I think it's negligable, maybe 10HP which probably won't be noticed. Again I don't think it's worth it..
The sprint booster definitely would recommend that to anyone with a BMW.
