F10 M5 engine revealed

6 speed was not matched well to the V10, but was on the E39 M5. If they change ratios and match to the new FI V8, no way in hell would I take smg/dct. I hate SMG's feel, I could careless of a few split milliseconds or the faster shifting, I want to row gears period lol. Even in diesel trucks we've mainly had manual trans, except for the Fords. Different strokes for different people, partner in another biz actually just picked up an SMG M6.... I still hate SMG after driving it today for the hell of it lol.
Maybe I should have worded differently, I didn't mean keep the exact trans and just bolt it on, I mean just offering a manual trans option period.

I also have to say I drove the DCT and it was fun, in auto that is, I ilked the hard shifts of the SMG alot better, felt more of a race car. The DCT feels like a fast fast auto tranny similar to the 335s but way faster. I guess thats why I didnt opt for the 550i or the M3.

Tho few details are out, I'm willing to bet the boost will not be anywhere near 20. If it is, I'm buying an extended warranty from the get go.
Also, I dont think the intent of the OP was to dicuss the merits of a stick vs semiauto. Who cares? It's nice to have choices. Why dont we just start an Oil thread???

BMW had to do this to compete with the Panamera and others. They already have the powerplant why not use it. Better mileage and better emissions.
However, the reason for the lower top speed is the much lower redline. Simple math. the higher redline car with useable power will go faster. The old M5 with the speed limiter removed has gone as fast as 330 kph. But the new one will have more useable power band where you are likely to live. How many actually go over 200 routinely. BMW did the logical thing, even though the sound wil never come close to the V10.

And that, my friends, is terrific

although there's something to be said about endless waves of power, the character of a high-strung V10 is pretty awesome. let's hope the new engine doesn't sacrifice the fun factor.
what is this, a Subaru forum? haha

Honestly I would gladly trade some 120 mph plus performance and a lower top speed in exchange for the M5 just not feeling that fast at lower speeds. And lets face it, this motor propels the X6 M at its bloated curb weight (~5200 lbs) to 1/4 mile times of 12.6 even at the 555 hp rating.

IT is all about the character of the car. To me the M3 V8 and the M5 V10 ar like the Porsche GT3 and CarreraGT engines. They are extreme examples of what an NA engine can do. They are built to the max. Works of Art. There is no doubt that the V8TT will outperform it to 170mph, Just like a GT2 and turbo will beat a GT3. But the sound of a built NA engine is intoxicating.

I don't know have you ever driven a Dinan S2 M5, the modified S62 in that car in my opinion is truly special. It also makes the E39 M5 just as fast as the E60 M5. The combo of low rev torque, a creamy mid range and a high rpm charge make the perfect engine in my opinion.
But then again I have a different frame of mind than most, and the M5 or M6 just don't feel truly fast until your over engine speeds were most engines are already in their powerbands. A lightweight Lotus Esprit would be amazing with the S85, but for some reason the M5's weight or gearing seems to blunt its 383 lb ft of torque....and then also the 6100 rpm torque peak as well conspires against it in a heavy car.

Germeezy, I could not disagree more. Comparing a modded car to non modded is of no use. In stock form the newer M5 is faster. but the E39 is fast and a great car. As for low end grunt not being there. It is true that these cars and the M6's usually get taken by a car in the beginning but very fast cars, but they make it all back and pass their competition fairly quickly. Here is an example of one taking on a stock 996tt. Now these cars are close enough that a mistake can give the win either way. However, this shows how good that high rpm engine is.

There is another video on the m5board that shows an E60M5 beating a modded turbo. I can't believe that one, but I am guessing the turbo driver screwed up somehow. In any case, the vid above proves the point well on how good that engine pulls. In the last week and a half, I have driven about 4 - 4 door sedans. E39, AMG E55, 335i, E60. The E60 was by far the most powerful and fastest.

Those trans are breaking left and right.
