E60 M5 SMG feedback wanted
If you have an E60 M5 or experience the SMG trans daily please leave your feedback and thoughts. I have a few questions / worries / myths to ask about.
Is this a manual gearbox with a clutch similar to F1 and E-gear? if so how dependable is this trans? what are its faults / glitches? how livable is it on a daily basis (grocery getter, city driving)? I recently drove the M5 and I drove it in sport, I was having so much fun with the paddles that I forgot to put it in "Auto" to feel how the shifts are. How smooth or otherwise would you rate the shifts in normal driving (around town, not in a rush) on a scale of 1-10 (1=spine shattering and has some down time as it shifts. 10=smooth shifting, hard to notice any shifting happened). Lastly I would love an overall feedback on that car to live with V10 and all. I head those cars are famous for electrical glitches, true? Thanks in advance..... Oh and pics would be nice

i have a 2006 m6 with the smg and i love it!! I get very frustrated when i read all these reviews and people bash it because i feel some of the complaints are caused by lack of understanding of the system. Everyone loves the smg when driven to the limits because its programed to shift faster as the rpms rise, so if you shift at redline the car will shift faster than if you shift at 2000 rpm. Most sequential gear box's shift the same no matter what. The big fault with the smg is that little arrow at the base of the shifter that can control the shift speed, under normal driving conditions if that is set at anything but the fastest then it is unbearable and to make things worse when you adjust to your comfort it goes away after you shut the car off so you have to do it every time. When the car shifts at some of the slower settings the car shifts slow lazy and unnatural. i suspect that when most tests are conducted that these detail are over looked. also the smg doesn't work well in auto mode but neither does most sequential systems. All the new dual clutch systems that are out now i personally dont like because they shift gears so fast they dont feel like a stick anymore and i dont care for them. so smg all the way fore me even though it took me almost 6 months to really get good at it.
