Need help deciding: M3 or 335i?!?

Congrats on the purchase. Overall out of the box the M3 is a better car than a 335, however once you start modding the 335 things get a little more interesting. My brother has a 335 that he has modded over time...pretty much has everything done to it this side of a turbo upgrade meaning all the bolt-ons, meth, ic, m3 control arms, ohlins ms suspension. The car is simply awesome. Makes well over 400hp, might even be close to 400whp depending on the dyno and runs 12's all day long on street tires...
We have a friend with an m3 with some bolts on,..exhaust etc and he can't keep pace with the 335 no matter what situation presents itself. Without a supercharger the M3 is no match for a fully modded 335. I'm saying this cause i have experienced it.
Having said all that, if i was in your shoes i would buy the m3 as well.

I'll jump in if you don't mind as I've owned 2 (soon to be 3) BMW's and am big into the tuning market and such.
While the M is a beast of a car on the track and offers some of BMW's best technology and features, it's a little on the unpractical side for a daily driver. The 335i or 335is will offer you gobs of power and thrills without draining your wallet at the gas pump (as bad as the M3 at least). The drawback is the HPFP issues that the 335i's have faced in recent past. It doesn't happen to all of them, mine has been fine, but it is an issue.
Also, are you going to modify the car at all? With power in mind, you can't really do too much to an M3 unless you wanna sink $20k into a supercharger if you want significant gains. Sure exhaust, a pully set, intake and a few of those things will get you maybe 20hp more, but the 335i is a tuners dream. You can easily hit M3 horsepower levels and easily surpass the torque output with just a few quick mods. For $599 you can get a tune on one and easily have 350whp/350wtq (appx). Add in some exhaust (full downpipe thru muffler), intake and an intercooler and you'll be knocking at 400whp no problem. With the N54 (twin turbo) they also have a single turbo conversion that has been putting out something close to 500hp and 450 ft/lb torque.
The M you're gonna get the best stock stuff that BMW makes but the 335i has a little more tuning potential. Plus almost anything they make for the M you can get or put on a 335i (seats, suspension components, body kits).
I think its just worth really thinking out on your part depending on what you'd like to do to the car in the long run. If you're not gonna track the car even occasionally why would you even need the M? Just don't think that since the M is more $ its better in EVERY way compared to the 335i.

Congrats on the purchase! I had a 335i and I would have recommended the M3 as well. You would have spent money to try and get close to it anyway and as stated, it just isnt. M3 is a completely different (better) car all around.

[quote=FAUEE;2861531]I can dig some pictures up for you. Count me in the DCT camp too, but I can see the joy argument. M3s are one of the few cars that I don't mind using the clutch in in traffic. But personally, I'd still get the DCT because it'll shift faster than me, I don't have to worry about the clutch in normal driving, and my wifey could drive it if she needed to(she has no intentions on learning to drive a manual transmission). Keep in mind, I'm a young guy (23), so I'm part of the flappy paddle, playstation/gran turismo, ADD stricken generation.
So on to some nice LeMans Blue pics (I haven't seen this color in person, but I'm still a sucker for white and red ) Thanks to the guys on e90post from which I have graciously hotlinked the pictures without any permissions or what not, lol.
The one I posted earlier is Interlagos Blue.
If you do end up buying new... BMW Individual paints are sweet. This one is Laguna Seca Blue
Monte Carlo Blue (my favorite of the blues)
I used to take my M3 to same dealer to get serviced Autohaus Pressath...Brings back some fond memories of driving in Germany..

I have a 335 (N54) and I really enjoy it. Having said that, I spent some time driving the crap out of an M3 and its just different. The seats for example are not something that can be replicated in the 335 with any package etc. The suspension is so well sorted on the M3 and the DCT does not take away from the driving experience at all IMO. If you like manuals, get that but if you get the chance drive them both. Sure you can tune the 335 and add coilovers etc, but the M3 comes the "right" way right out of the box. One man's opinion. Oh yeah, the HPFP can be an issue in the 335, just thought I should mention it. For what its worth, I have 2 cars w/ the N54 and both HPFPs are still going strong at 30k miles+.
