well, arguably, if there was someone who was skilled at tuning the b7 in america, you could obtain a pulley from germany (because, come on, they HAVE to exist....) and gain more hp, more easily, from the alpina than you would from the m5. it being a N/A motor means headers, intake, tune, larger throttle bodies (10 of them!) or god forbid, buying a $30,000 motor from dinan. the problem with the alpina is the footprint, and the weight.

the real choice is supreme luxury, or sporty elegance? automatic or smg? i think the alpina is the missing link between the m5 and the 760. sport luxury.

You are wrong the B7 is just about as qucik as the M5. It actully feels quicker because of the torque. I have sold both cars to clients and the 760 is a luxury yatcht and the B7 is a beast. Get the B7. More power and the sound is awesome. The rise on the Alpina is amazing considering it has 21's. It actually rides as smooth at the stock 750 with 18" wheels. The Alpina is much more of a "special" car trust me as I have some a few and have sold a few 760 as well.

i have not had the pleasure of hearing one. i was hoping someone would give an opinion on the exhaust note. yes i agree that the alpina is more "special". it is very unique. i have never actually seen one in person, yet i have seen dozens of m5's. add luxury exotic to the list of descriptions oh and the m5 and b7 are usually within .3 seconds of each other in the 1/4 mile, the b7 being heavier and slower. a pulley and tune could turn the tide. finding someone who has any information on that........ well, quite frankly, is a daunting task at best.

and i will add, the alpina's 4.4L engine has a forged crank, upgraded connecting rods and pistons with a 9.0:1 compression ratio from a unique head gasket. yet it only pushes 11.5 psi of boost. what would the fuel pump/injectors support? where are the bmw mechanics?

I am sure that once you hit 100+ the M easily walks away from the B7 though correct?

Ive wondered why such low boost as well. You would think that they would want a car to compete with the 65 amgs and this certainly could be the car if the boost was higher.

it seems that as their drag coefficiens are nearly the same, as is their hp, they both meet considerable wind resistance above 100mph. the major difference you will notice when looking at the performance numbers for these cars is the torque, 383 lb/ft for the m5 and 516 for the alpina, and their wieght, 4012 lbs for the m5 and 4299 for the alpina. gear ratios are as follows:

First Gear Ratio (:1)3.99 Second Gear Ratio (:1)2.65 Third Gear Ratio (:1)1.81 Fourth Gear Ratio (:1)1.39 Fifth Gear Ratio (:1)1.16 Sixth Gear Ratio (:1)1.00 Reverse Ratio (:1)3.99 Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1)3.62 Fuel Tank Capacity, Approx (gal)18.5 Seventh Gear Ratio (:1)0.83

2- 2.65
3- 1.81
4- 1.39
5- 1.16
6- 1.00

1- 4.17
2- 2.37
3- 1.52
4- 1.14
5- .87
6- .69

those that are savvy can see why the alpina would lose the race to 100mph or in the 1/4 mile, even with its obvious torque advantage. its just not geared for racing the way the m5 is. but i would think that after 100, say in 4th or 5th gear, the alpina would stay with the m5. this is merely speculative, seeing as i have no real world experience in this. i would love to see a 1/2 mile race between these two. later i will look for texas/maxton mile/ land speed times on these two and tell ya what i find.

Sounds good let me know what you find. I would definitely think that the Alpina would have a much better chance of staying with the M at lower speeds because of the tourque advantage but I know that there arent many cars out there that will hang with that v10 at 100+. Ill let you know if I am able to find anything on my end.
