2004 BMW z4 steering question

On my 04 z4 I notice the steering will almost get stuck while driving. If you are driving down a straight road and just turn the wheel left to right it is not smooth. It feels almost like it is notchy or getting stuck on something. I put it up on my lift and dont see anything visbly wrong with it. Someone said the car has electric steering and I am wondering if something is going wrong with that? The worst part about the problem is it is not all the time. Sometimes it will go days without doing it and other times it will be right when I get in the car. Warm or cold weather doesn't seem to affect the problem.

Has anyone ever heard of this issue or have any ideas?
