not 'high' at all, i agree. im supposed to be pushing around 400 crank hp with my setup from what ive been told. his gain of 31 hp and 23 tq is not at all extraordinary.

31 hp and 23tq seems to be a little high, thats the kind of power you would get on a EVO, not on a s54 engine. I could be wrong, but I have never heard of such gains with headers and cats.
You forgot that I had I have a custom tune as well Just switched over to super plus unleaded right before the tune also. Tuner said after some miles the ECU should adapt even more and squeek a bit more HP & torq.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I started a N00bie thread - from Bavaria. Had an issue with uploading photos last night, will try again today.

I've done some research and it has come to my attention that the CSL headers combined with cats provide the same amount of HP as the SS step headers combined with tuning. Can someone shine light on this.

what id like to know it what are the gain of SS headers and cats vs. csl headers and cats to keep the parts the same and have an actual way to judge which offers more power.

Those are very good questions! My choice to go OEM was 2 fold; 1)tuner doesn't like SS, 2)tuner said OEM CSL has better flow then SS.
Now, does he have paperwork to prove these claims, no. So why did I trust my mechanic, cuz he has the "old school" work phlosophy: get it done right the first time, so what if it takes longer. And the really plus factor was that he also builds race cars

hey man, thats cool, SS def gives you the gains which is great. as far as oem csl stuff, idk, i dont have them and cant tell, can only rely on judgements from those who have them. either way, my car and your car are set up similarly. H&R springs with koni adj shocks are great arent they?!? also, arent hjs cats just replicas of SS? not sure, thats what i have heard. the thing that i remember reading from R&T was that although the csl was lighter and faster around a track, in straight line performance, it was no faster than a stock non csl m3! i personally think that a full NA system paired with 4.10 gears is the way to go, but obv i am biased since this is how i have my M set up.

Actually I was told it is the other way around, HJS makes cats for SS. Proof, I have none, just hear say.
