I PERSONALLY want a m3 reason why is smg 7 gear trans i love it and if it feels like M5,M6 then i will be in heaven but if 335 comes with smg trans then i prefer 335,the 335 imo has more potential than a v8 motor that pretty much is limited on extra power than a car you can easily boost ......

And that's exactly what I'm saying. Compare hp, not necessarily tq. My bet is that the new M3 will manage to walk a 400/400 335i even with the large torque difference.

i really dont see that happening. you have to remember its about hp and tq (area) below the curve, and the 335i is gonna have the most area there. the m3 is MORE linear than a 335i in terms of hp and the tq def goes to the 335i. gonna be interesting, but i foresee that in a straight line, the 335i is gonna win those battles, the twisties are a different story tho. id still rather have my 3300 lbs e46 m3 over these 3600-3800 lb overweight cars.

You're absolutely correct about the area under the curve being the major factor -- remember that the 295 ft-lb V8 in the new M will go to 8400rpm (versus 7k in the 335i) and has an impressively flat torque curve itself. Essentially, the M's curve makes up for its lack of height with more width. For that reason, I still think the new M will take that hypothetical 400/400 335i.

I also agree that, for the street, the E46 is still very capable and satisfying even in stock form.

yea, the m3s as well as most NA sports cars are known for flat tq curves that are consistent up to redline. i still think that a modded 335i will take in in a straight line. i know that if my car didnt have 4.10 gears, it would not be as fast and i feel the stock gearing on the new m3 is gonna be the same way. the 335i just goes, and there have been vids of it beating m3s. the m3 is gonna have a high peak hp but the 335 has its hp (boost) come on early in the rev range, and despite the 7K rpm redline, which is prob higher with a tune, its got the hp advantage i think as well as tq.
