The Porsche service manual refers to it as the "sheetmetal brace". In the description for removing it, the manual says you need to make sure the car is jacked up evenly at the approved jacking points. It then goes on:

"Suspension alignment is NOT necessary if the sheetmetal brace is removed and installed observing the aforementioned conditions. In the most unfavourable case, the rear-axle wheel alignment values may change slightly. This could cause a slight change in the steering wheel position (as compared with the position before removal) when the vehicle is driven straight ahead."

So taking this sheetmetal brace on and off without the car level can result (in the worst case scenario) in small alignment problems. Not a big issue really. HOWEVER, this is just talking about taking the sheetmetal brace on and off. Leaving it off completely would certainly require an alignment as it would be beyond the worst case scenario described here. I don't think this would be wise then considering that the brace does affect alignment and does appear to be a structural part of the rear suspension.

I don't know if I even believe this. I've played around with loosening the bolts to the triangular plate and shifting things around within the tolerances of their mounting holes to gain an extra 0.1 degrees or so of camber per side. I could very easily see this throwing off your alignment unless you are 50% lucky to get it back about right in the same place. It is a structural piece as Mantis found out. I applaud Gary in BR for his ambition to experiment and modify, but I would get a lower stress bar on that ASAP. Gorgeous car, BTW.

Thanks for the compliments on the car,

I am going to order the lower stress bar, I would rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks for all of your help/concern on this. I'll keep everyone up to date on the lower stress bar.

There will be a stage 2 to the turbos in the beginning of next year. Stay tuned.
