I used Duplicolor Caliper Paint:

It comes with a cleaner (break clean) and a can with a brush. I brushed on 4 coats to get a smooth shine that looks just like powder coating without taking off the calipers. Cheap too.

hmm...looks like everyone is going from red to yellow. i still have my stock color. it's a horrible grayish dull....blahhhhhh. i was thinking going red for mine. thought it would look good on with the silver car and wheels. does anyone ever just go black? if so....any pics?

we have black with black wheels on the 996, but would like to see pics of black calipers and silver rims.

 

I found the brush on caliper paint looked like ****. I had mine powdercoated instead. The brush on paint globbed and had lumps and runs.

Are you guys who spray paint them, just not doing the backs? How do you keep from painting the rotors? Seems like it would require a tremendous amount of prep to spray paint them on the car.

 

okay...i'm educating myself here. i hear the term "powdercoat" all of the time. what exactly is powdercoating? i hear it's the only way to go in order for the calipers not to look "ricer". lol! see! i'm learning the whole lingo here! =)

Definitely, painting the calipers tend to leave brush marks and doesn't look nearly as nice especially when up close. I'd definitely recommend powder coating.....

These calipers were powder coated.....

 

The yellow looks really nice. I did a set on a 996 I own... pretty easy, but took some
time. I sprayed them Ferrari yellow.

 

The yellow calipres look great. I did a set on a 996 I own... took a while to do, but look great. Got the decals from Xenon mods too.

 

It does if you don't do it right. Mine look perfectly smooth and completely covered like powder coating. It takes 4 coats with 20mins in between to let it dry. It didn't start to look nice until after the 4th coat which is where I stopped.

If you don't clean the calipers properly and stop at one or two coats thats exactly what will happen. I have powder coated a lot of parts on my other cars and yeah, thats the way to go for sure. If you don't wanna take off your calipers and have downtime then the duplicolor is so good you will never tell the difference. Unless you have the wheel off an are looking right in the wheel well with your head inside there looking at mine, you would never tell they are not powder coated they are that good. It's also not my first time using that product and my first results we're also less than stellar much the same as what it sounds like happened with yours.

Forgot to mention... clean 'em up real good. I used carb cleaner. there wasn't so much as a fingerprint left behind. Some self etching primer too helps paint stick.

 

I once painted my calipers with engine paint (bright red). After the third coat, I cured them in my wife's oven at 225* for an hour. Smoothed the paint out and left a hard finish. They lasted quite a while. That was before powder coating, which I think is the way to go now...

 

Powder coating is really a great way to go but it's sooooo much work!

I like this paint process if it works well and if it lasts. My OEM calipers are black, but yellow would look killer with my light blue metallic paint and yellow fender shields.

I am going to give this paint process a try. I contacted the person who makes the decals to see if he can provide Ferrari decals.

Would make a nice package if it's good and permanent.

 

I love it that even Ferrari owners need to save a few bucks here and there!
