Sell me on or steer me from the boxster...

I've been looking for a new 'fun' car... something that can be driven daily if need be, but can also be enjoyable... i test drove an '03 today and really enjoyed it... price seems to be pretty good on some older ones like the '00/01s....

Why should or shouldn't I pick one up?

Thanks

Don't buy one.

-Their addictive

-You will smile too much

-You will drop $$$ on pointless aftermarket mods just to give your car your own touch

Try to get an 'S' if possible

boxsters are great cars. +1 on going for an S model. 986's are down in the mid-$20K. look for one with low miles and get extended warranty or go mod crazy like most guys around here.

go for it!

These cars are pretty much bullet proof. Get a PPI done, just common sense.

In my experience there is not much difference between an "s" and regular Boxster. On a track you will see some improvement.

Buy the newest one with the most options you can find.

I had an 02 Boxster S. Only had one electrical problem (false engine fault readings), which was covered under warranty. Otherwise, the car was perfect and a lot of fun to drive! 03 and above has a glass rear window. If mine had that, I wouldn't have sold.

Very addictive indeed. I purchased my '01, replaced the top with a glass rear window, threw it on my dyno...then started modding from there...she practically lives on my dyno (after mods of course)..

Didn't some of the early cars have engine and other maintenance problems?

I'm kind of in the same boat as Lucky - about to take first step in Porsche world with the Boxster.

Can anyone comment if there's a big difference between the '01 S and 2.7L's. Planning on buying in the next 60 days and if a great optioned / modded 2.7L comes available - wondering if I should pass to wait for an S.

Thanks guys.....

I've had a base and a S. Go for the S if you plan on keeping the car for a long time. The extra power is addictive.

my first engine question would be the rear main seal (rms). have the tech's look at that before buying. i bought a 2001 boxster s. during the 18 months i had it, i repalced it once under warranty and it failed again.

also the top with plastic window. don't put the top down in COLD WEATHER. that was my first pcar and couldn't wait for the cooler weather. when the top dropped i heard a tearing noise. got home, put the top up and realized that the plastic has torn on each side of the plastic. perhaps my fault for not realizing how brittle that material would get in those temperatures. KEEP IN MIND I LIVE IN FLORIDA. so how cold could it have been? only in the upper 40's. not a very good experience with the boxster.

however, my brother has a 1999 boxster with 120k miles on it and loves it.
