Looks great so far. Is the intercooler ok by the muffler heat? (Question from the ignorant).

Oh yeah I'd be the first guy to step up and say that if you can afford a better alternative then do so

The only reason why I chose this route was the deal I got for all the parts. There's just certain criteria the turbo itself has to face such as...

1. matching similar displacement/cylinders
2. needs to be efficient at lower boost levels since we need to run low boost
3. to keep things simple, it has to be a single turbo
4. garrett based (just for ease of change)

The reason why I like to use garrett based turbos is due to their popularity so alternates and spare parts are around everywhere and are dirt cheap.

Now if I was going to do a TT set up, I would utilize twin t25s from DSM's,in fact this was my first choice if the extra complexity wasn't going to be an issue $$ wise.

The issue with the 944 turbo is that although their motor is very close to our displacement, their motors also run way lower compression and use more boost then what most tuners (of our gen cars) use. Also, I believe they utilize IHI's turbo which will limit you in the future if you would like to bolt on something else.

Max: good call about the intercooler. To remedy this I will be using exhaust wrap as well as finding some heat shielding when I make the scoop for the intercooler.

I hope you dont think I was criticising your projects or decisions. On the contrary, I applaud you for showing everyone that it can be done for less than $7000+ that some companys want to install a turbo. I wish you success so that we could do the same and learn.

Ah no worries, I never took it that way. All I'm trying to do is jump start something for these vehicles for those who might be on the fence. One of the most promising things that I have found was from the clubna-t (non turbo supra) guys who are very close in respect to displacement and compression. Using a turbo a step sized larger (also Cheapo Chinese) have been able to jump from 170rwhp to 200rwhp on 2psi alone with no tuning what so ever. If there was any assurance, I know our 100% stock motors's and tuning can handle 2psi, even on Cali pump gas. If I ever get brave, I'll purchase some VP C16 and turn it up to 8-9psi

Any time frame to finish your project... most of us are at the edge of our seats with curiosity... Great job btw, but I do have some questions... won't the extra heat in the engine burn the current gaskets?, also won't the stress of the turbo vibrating affect the parts where the turbo is mounted? How are you dampening the extra vibration?

Good questions...

1. All mechanical is now done

2. Hmm gaskets your going to have to elaborate? If your thinking about HG's, then yes the turbo has the potential to lift the heads or destroying the HG's altogether, however this can be remedied simply by monitoring boost and watching the good ol' wideband sensor.

3. Vibration.. So far none? My fab guy and I have been doing trial and error and so far the results are very promising. Any sort of vibration that could have been there has been resolved by the manner of brackets.

More pix and a small video to come

Update for the turbo car

An update for those who care

Drove the car home yesterday from the shop to my house which is a good 15 mile run. Didn't go WOT just yet due to the lack of race gas in the tank, although I did just enough to hear the turbo whine just a bit... sounds freakin awesome

So far no issues in terms of driveability which was my main target. I saw MPG go down but this looks like a normal thing to the DME as it did this when I removed the muffler. Car is running very smooth still with no hiccups on the light spool that I did give it.

There is one small issue though and that is the turbo is leaking oil through the turbine housing. I thought obviously Chinese cheapo ebay turbo is blown just like everyone said it would BUT upon further research it looks like Porsche and every tuner that deals with the turbo version(s) of these cars has 1 occurring theme and thats a small oil sump right after the turbo oil drain outlet and THEN the scavenge pump.

Hopefully this will end the oiling finding it's way out of the turbine housing and into the downpipe issue
