It will never happen. At least in the foreseeable future. They'd be cutting their own throats. Porsche will keep the 911 upstream, develop the CGT to compete with the other exotics, and forever keep the step child Cayman detuned.

Would be very interesting. Is it possible? It actually is,i dont see it taking sales form the 911. However considering Porsche has always somewhat given the Baby of the family the least attention, the Cayman/Boxster Turbo may just be a Fantasy. Anyhow,380/400bhp for the Turbo sounds good to to me,after all the Cayman/Boxster handle very well, yet very few know that. We'll see what happens.

doesn't make sense but years ealier people said the same thing about Turbo Convertible.
At this point, it seems like anything is possible. And i mean anything. The car companies are no longer loyal, all they care about making more $$$$$. that is the bottom line

It would not canibalize the 911 sales, two different concepts... one is a mid angine, the other is a rear engine...
Plus the S version is close to $80,000.00 fully loaded, a trubo version could well be in the six figure arena and performance figures would be close to the Carrera S...
I say they'll do it...

This isn't a last word argument. So I hope you don't take it that way. Fact is Porsche detunes the Boxster/Cayman line, therefore it shows their strategy for obvious reasons. They also could easily up sell the Cayman with a GT3 or TT power train, but they do not. You have to ask yourself why not? I believe the answer is clear.
From an engineering standpoint, the mid engine is superior in all performance aspects except braking. That much has been proved by F1 since the 1950-60's. Notice also why Porsche's flag ship model, the CGT, is mid engine. All cutting edge super cars are mid-engined.
However, business is more than where best engineering finds a price point. The "911" has a catchet, and the old guard who fancy that will pay the premium for it. There's a heritage and mystique in a 911, and many pay for it without wanting to admit it. That x factor is worth cold hard cash, Porsche knows full well. That may change someday when the old guard roll over.
If anything, Porsche is hedging as technology progresses. As competition and performance increases, so do designs. It may well be that the 987 derivatives will gain a loyal enough following to one day outlive the rear engined bread and butter. Die hards groaned that the last 911 was the 993 air cooler, but that didn't sway the economics. Porsche will do whatever makes them more sustainable cash. For the foreseeable future, nothing in their line up indicates a change in business philosophy. To the contrary, most every engineering decision was geared to protect 911 market share.
Having said all that. I'm still in the market for a 997tt, wondering if I should wait for a 998tt
