Putting Boxster Into Reverse

Putting Boxster Into Reverse
Well this is probably a real dumb question and I'll probably be embarrassed about asking it, but how do you put a Boxster into reverse? I have to move my brother's car out of the garage and haven't been able to figure out how to get it into reverse. I've obviously depressed the clutch, pushed the shifter over pretty hard to the left (don't want to break anything), and even pushed down on the top of the shifter while trying to push it to the left. Each time, I end up in first gear. I also looked through the manual but no help there either. It is a 550 Commemorative edition if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance.

hmmm....our 996 (6speed) it's a bit tough to get it into reverse. you just have to really push it over and up. but, my boxster (5 speed) is easy to put in reverse, just like any other car.
maybe something is wrong with the shifter and it's not you. =)
best of luck!

call the dealer and see what they suggest.
i know it can be tough to get it over there sometimes. when i've had it happen, i've put the stick shift in all of the gears just to make sure it would go and then i pushed it up into reverse. i know nothing about tranmissions and stick shifts...etc., but maybe it got stripped somehow or gunk build up and it won't go over.

Liquid:
Isn't the shift pattern depicted on the shifter? That would tell you if it's a 5 or 6 speed. If it's a 6 speed, clutch in, over HARD left and up. My 6 speed Boxster is equipped with a short shifter which is one reason why it's probably so hard to get over far enough left to go up into reverse.
Hope this helps...just don't break anything : )

Grab it with your right hand and push it hard to the left. Everyone that drives my car can't get it into reverse because they think they'll break it if they push too hard so you're not the only one. Don't be afraid to really yank it.

yep....push harder..over to the left and up!
do worry..your not going to break anything... that would be pretty tough to do. just push harder
