Has this happened to your boxster.....orange blob!

hi guys,

i woke up this morning went out to my beloved box-star and noticed when i went to turn on the heat. when i did i noticed that the area where it gives you the read out of the temp....manual...automatic....a/c...etc (the orange lights) has a big orange bubble inside of the screen now. like it leaked?

when i called the dealer, they said the entire unit had to be replaced and it was about $400 and $100 for install. all for an annoying, ugly orange blob.

do any of you know....can you buy this part online and install it yourself? is it a huge pain in the butt to do?

any suggestions? i'd rather try myself and get it from a part place and install myself if it can be done fairly easily.

thanks in advance!

I've never seen it, but it is common enough that some guy on eBay sells "aftermarket" LCD panels. See link. No affiliation. This may or may not be a DIY depending on your skills. Also, note that the display numbers and such vary somewhat from OEM because I think the same controller is used in Audis, etc. In the listing there is a picture of a blob.

I have on 02 Boxster S and have a similar problem with that panel. I don't have a blob, but I have a strip of the orange missing. I took it to the dealer because I thought it was possibly a bulb. They told me the same thing, I have to replace the entire panel. Same price they gave you.

Its the LCD panel, I notice that when its really really cold and i turn on my ignition, the LCD panel looks like the ink has leaked or LCD has cracked inside... Try not to touch it, cause i didnt touch mine and as the interior warmed up the display cleared up

^^really? i had the opposite. it seemed to do it when it got hot. it's not seeming to go away. =*( i wonder if it spreads or gets worse or if it stays the same. it's frustrating because the blob covers up where the little a/c indicator is, so i can't see it.

but, it sounds like we have the exact same thing. it looks like leaking orange ink. but yours cleared up. lucky you! hehe!

did you check out the link posted above on ebay? do you think that's the right thing? it's at a great price!

i think i'll pick one up and install it myself.

There was a discussion on installing the replacement Boxster climate control LCD at http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18754 and a picture of the replacement is in the discussion at http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...howtopic=15193

Hope this helps

(my poor boxster is being naughty!). today, when i parked the car and pulled up the e-brake all the way to the top, the car shut itself off! is this normal?? usually i just pull it up, it clicks as it's being pulled up and that's it. today, i must have pulled a bit harder and it clicked on the way up like normal....and then went one more notch up and then the car turned off. it was a bit twilight zonish! lol!
