Can't decide between Cayman, 370Z, and Saturn Sky Redline

The core difference between the Z and the Porsche is the level of engineering refinement. Truth is, the new Z (and the 350) is an amazing car for the money. Powerful, good handling, stunning (IMO), reliable. Seems like the all time best sports car for the dollar. But every time I've driven a Z, I'm reminded of the coarse nature of the drivetrain. Since the 240Z and for every car in between, revving the engine is not a very satisfying experience. Harsh and unpleasant at high revs. It's almost like it's a Nissan thing. Surely they have the skills to eliminate that, but it's always there.
The Porsche on the other hand is pure smoothness. From the calm and predictable nature of the suspension, to the excellent gear whine of the transmission, to the satisfaction of running the engine to the redline, it's pure engineering excellence.
That said, it' twice the price, less absolute power and more expensive to maintain. Many people don't notice the difference in refinement and don't consider handling more critical than power in a sports car. For those people, a Z is just about perfect. I sometimes wish I was one of them. It would sure have saved me a bunch of money.
The Saturn though. I just don't get it.

This seems like a great car. Maybe for a fellow 6speeder, he'll cut even a better deal.

Back in April paid $50K for my new 08 Cayman S. While leftover '08's...
the Cayman S is a $60K+ car. The Sky and 370Z are $30K+. Unless you are comparing a used Porsche vs new Saturn and Nissan this is a very unfair comparison. Better off comparing a base Cayman (Still $50K+). You can find used 2007 Caymans with low mileage for 35K. The Cayman is the better car. Just a question of whether you want new or used. Even with Saturn's dubious repair record the Cayman will have higher maintenance and repair costs than the others.
are almost gone there are a few still around and probably at even bigger discounts.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Too late now probably but find a Sky with blown motor then have..
I am looking to spend about 35k on my next sports car. My previous cars were a 1991 MR2 Turbo, and a 2003 350Z Touring.
I really miss the mid-engine handling of my MR2, and appreciated the torque of the Z but found it a little heavy and not quite as nimble as I want in a sports car.
So, for 35k I can get either a new Saturn Sky Turbo, a new 370Z, or a used Cayman S with around 40k miles.
Has anyone owned a 370Z or Sky and can compare it to the Cayman?

Price? Around $30K. But what a car with a 6.0l V8 engine.
course, owner said one can buy the Soltice and maybe Sky with a power bump option (sort of like an X50 option for Porsches) for $600 which raises stock engine's output quite a bit. Won't shove out 400+ hp like 6.0 V8 but close... around 360hp if I heard this guy right.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I'd get the Z and buy a GTM turbo kit, seats, wheels, suspension, entertainment, and some exterior pieces. and you'd still have some cash left over.
the porsche is a different car. engine is in the middle, drives differently, different type of engine.
sure you can compare the performance, but not how you can live with them.
i'd go to a Porsche meet and a Nissan meet and look at the Cayman S and the 370z Sport/touring. This way you can see mostly everything in it's true colors, and see what people are doing to them and what feels best to you.

The Z is a great car and the VQ's are amazing engines. I too have heard that the 370 is a massive improvement on an already great chassis. But a Porsche is still a Porsche, something the Z could never be. There is a significant difference between the level of prestige and build quality between the two cars. I say two cars because the Saturn should not even be something you would consider with the other two options. At least something like an STi or Evolution would be a far better option than a Sky Redline in terms of performance.
