New 2009 Boxster S - Need Loud Exhaust

Hi there. I am new to the forum and I need some help. I have a 2009 Boxster S and the stock exhaust is way too quiet!! I am looking for an aftermarket muffler (CAT-Back only) with a deep/loud sound, no drone, and hopefully some nice gains in power. I have seen video clips from Fabspeed and FVD Brombacher and they both sound pretty good. Are there any other units available out there? Also, any 6-Speeders out there with any of these units (or any other units) with any opinions/sound videos would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Loud exhaust with no drone are pretty much mutually exclusive. You can go with an exhaust with a switch so that you can set it to be on the quiet side (less drone) when you want, or set it to louder when you want a sporty/louder tone (more drone). The PSE or Capristo and Borla offer this feature. I have the Remus race exhaust... it sounds almost exotic above 4000 rpm... but if you are loading the engine at lower RPM... there is a little bit of "drone". For me, I can live with it. FVD offers (speedart/M&M) exhaust that's very well balanced between tone vs. drone. I don't know if Speedart has fitment for 2nd gen, but give Rhonda@FVD a call and she'll help you out.

I have actually heard the Capristo on a Cayman S, it sounds amazing when it's wide open and quiet (but tuned) when closed. Very expensive set-up considering the small gain in hp. I would consider Europipe and AWE.

like lithium said, there is no such thing as loud and deep without drone.
there are tons of exhausts out there, it all comes down to what you are looking for in sound

loud/deep: borla, fabspeed,AWE - i'd say these are all uber aggressive systems

semi aggressive is the M&M (FVD/speedart) exhaust which doesn't have as deep a tone but also has very minimal drone

on the quiet side is the milltek which is a touch louder than stock but apparently has no drone (i haven't heard in person yet)

i replaced my AWE after a year with an M&M and it suits me perfectly. i found the AWE too loud for my everyday driving. the M&M is quite tame under normal throttle but just screams when you let her rip open.

capristo is nice since it is adjustable but will cost you an arm and 2 legs. PSE will be a slightly cheaper alternative but HP gains i think are minimal.

- Weighs 23 lbs. (10,4 Kg)
- T 316 stainless steel for improved durability over T 304
- Dual 3.5"(90mm) round tips
- Made in Germany
- Intoxicating growl at idle, partial throttle and wide open throttle
- No DME programming necessary.

FVD is proud to introduce our newest line of Brombacher exhaust systems. Brombacher exhausts are engineered for the discerning Porsche® owner and offer unmatched performance, unparalleled quality, and incredible value. All of our exhausts are manufactured in Germany and are tested comprehensively for flow rate and characteristics, thermal stress, resistance to cracking, and longevity. To further ensure quality, all of our exhaust systems meet the standards of the German independent testing agency TUV; whose quality standards are among some of the strictest in the world.

Brombacher mufflers are “factory stamped” externally; unlike our competitors systems. This outer shell dampens and eliminates unwanted frequencies and ensures no resonance or drone in the cabin. The end result is a strong, linear, firing-order dominated flat-6 Porsche® sound. In addition, Brombacher exhausts systems are available for ultimate performance full titanium. Our titanium system’s are nearly 40% lighter compared steel and are available for late model, water cooled applications. Each of our exhaust’s have been extensively tested on both a chassis and engine dyno as well as logged thousands of miles on both the street and at the track. All this research, development and testing ensures maximum horsepower gains throughout a broad power band; all while maintaining reasonable sound levels for the street and provide a distinct, sporty exhaust note that is purely Porsche®.

by the way, in case folks missed it... FVD is running a special on the vendor page...

I personally recommend FVD because of their excellent customer service model - first and foremost. Rhonda and crew are passionate _and_ dedicated to their customers. I know this first hand because I had an issue with my laptop uploading FVD's DME tune to my Boxster S @ 4:45pm last Friday. I called up FVD, described the error/problem. Florian, FVD's IT manager, asked for my address (I live about 15 miles from their shop) and said he'll meet me at my drive way! Sure enough, at about 6pm... Florian pulled up in a VW Jetta 2.5L (big FVD banner on the back window), hooked up his laptop and uploaded the file to my car for me. Of course, my battery was pretty much flat at this point (I had borrowed a *bad* battery charger from a friend). So, Florian then help push my car out of the carport to give it a jump start. Even though there are no errors on the dash/info center, he wanted to make sure car is OK before he leaves. He hooked up the PWIS, and for another 30 minutes, manually cleared all the error resulted from the near flat battery. When it was all said and done, it was 8:30pm Friday evening... He had fielded 2 calls from his girlfriend, which I still feel terrible about keeping him from on Friday night (but I did find out Florian loves pizza and Thai food ). Then, Rhonda called to make sure the car is OK.
I feel I need to tell this story because it shows the length FVD goes to to help their customers out. I know of another FVD customer in California who had a similar, over the top, customer service experience. I didn't expect the type of support in today's ultra competitive, marginally thin car tuning business... but FVD gets a big plus in my book. And, thus my reason for recommending FVD without hesitation.

Full disclosure... While I'm a FVD customer (bought the DME tune for my 987S from Rhonda), I'm in no way affiliated with FVD (i.e., don't get kick-backs/compensated/benefits from recommending this vendor).

The quality and performance of the M&M exhaust being offered through FVD is unsurpassed. I had a set of headers with 200 cell HJS cats custom fabricated by them, and the end result was extremely satisfying .

I did a Fabspeed exhaust and ECU tune as well. Great job; exotic and agressive. No drone I can detect at this point and with the top down it really sounds alot like an exotic roadster much better than OEM. Alex and the guys there were great and really impressed me with their product and customer service. Really made the upgrade as easy as 1-2-3. Check em out.

www.fabspeed.com They also have a video post of my car to check out if you want to see and hear the exhaust. My car is a non S tho BTW.

Thanks for your input on the various exhaust systems. You said that you can't get deep and loud without getting some drone as a side-effect, yet when I listen to the videos from both Fabspeed and FVD Brombacher on their new units for the new Boxster S they both sound pretty deep and loud and both companies swear there is no drone. I realize that I haven't heard either one in person so I really don't know for sure. I wish there was someone out there with a 2009 Boxster S with either of these exhaust systems who could let me know what they really think about these units, especially the drone factor. Thanks.

Rhonda,
Thanks for all the information. I have heard the video/audio and this FVD Brombacher exhaust really sounds great. Do you have any pictures of it installed on a 2009 Boxster S? I am a little concerned about how big and shiny the unit is and how low it will hang down in the rear below the rear bodywork and be exposed. If you haven't noticed, the new 2009 Boxster rear end is a half-*** looking fake rear diffuser and it doesn't hang down as low as previous Boxsters' bodywork. Anyway, if you (or anybody else out there) have any pictures from the rear of the new 2009 Boxster with this muffler I would appreciate seeing it. Thanks.

drone is heard inside the cabin at certain rpm's . you won't really hear it in a video....

fabspeed and awe definately have heavy drone.

Hi. I have the 2009 Boxster and the Fabspeed and it does not hang below the rear diffuser at all. Fits nice and tight in the original mount points and from the rear all I see are tips and the OEM rear diffuser. Here are 2 pics of my specific install (my car was the one you heard/saw if you visited the Fabspeed site as I allowed them to video it)

As for drone I do not notice it other than what I think is a slight change in tone around 2800-3000 maybe depending on how I am driving/pushing the car or not. However I think with almost any aftermarket exhaust you get a slt bit of what some call drone but others call exotic and elevated sounds at those levels which we seek when we go aftermarket for a deeper/throatier exhaust. But as far as my car any drone if it exists is little to none IMHO...that's why I have a hard time even calling it that. Good luck!

Here is a video clip someone did of his Speedart exhaust. This is the exact exhaust system (same manufacturer & stamp) that 06CS has and Rhonda @ FVD sells.

Thanks for the info and pictures. I really appreciate your feedback on what little drone, if any, you are seeing in your unit. I hope there is someone out there with a 2009 Boxster S/Cayman S with the larger 3.4L DFI engine who can also verify those observations. Thanks again.
