Mile run in my Boxster S

Seems like these standing mile runs are popping up in small pockets in different parts of the country - Miami and Texas are two I'm aware of. There are probably anothers. They are put together by organizers like: http://www.topgunrun.com/, Mile Marker 1, and others. Runs are done at long, not normally in use airstrips. So, you are probably won't find one of these events at, say... the Hartsfield International. The mile run goal is stupid simple - see how fast your car can go in a mile.
Participants pay an entry fee ($100 - $400/car), and you can run as many times as you are queued up - much like those Friday night 1/4 mile runs at the local drag strips.

This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to take my Boxster S at an event hosted by milemarker-1.com at the Dade-Collier airport (2 mile long strip that's primarily used by 747s pilots to practice touch & go). I made 3 passes with my 2008 Boxster S, and was hitting between 150 to 153mph (per GPS) at the end of the mile. That's really not that bad - car has FVD tuned, Fabspeed header + cat & Remus exhaust. Current model Vettes (and there were plenty) were running 160s, and stock Z06s were running in mid 170s. Nissan 350Zs, as with N/A NSXs were in the high 140s. A turbo'ed NSX was in mid-160s. Sport bikes are in a different league - a couple were in the low 200mph - insane! Someone showed up in a shifter kart with a 1000cc yamaha bike engine... ran a 183mph. Yeah... keep arms inside at all times.

Here are some pix...

More pictures are posted in the FL forum: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...pics-here.html

Yes, yes... Porsches are not made for straight line, etc. But I think these standing miles run is one of those car things you do for the fun of it. Now I can say...yeah, I've done that.

I think that is great that you ran your Boxster. It must have been a lot of fun. Did it start to get a little floaty at the end or did it stay pretty planted. Did you have much left at the end?

I would love to take my car to one of these and probably will in the Fall.

The car was pretty stable even at 160mph (didn't push to go faster)... there was one time where the steering felt light, but it may be due to the wind. I know there was an event earlier in the year where a number of cars couldn't reach top speed because of cross wind.

If you are curious, someone commented his 997TT ran 175mph at the same track earlier in the year. If you have the opportunity, definitely do it!

Thanks Rhonda! Haven't seen you in a long while... as there hasn't been any SBBC in last few months. I started a monthly lunch meet for S. Florida folks and has seen good turn-outs. We are meeting this Saturday @ 11:30 for lunch @ Hooters on Cypress Creek and Andrews. Then we take a cruise down by the beach. You should come and hang out - we are usually @ Hooters until 1 or 1:30.... stop by, it'll be good to see you again.

You should definitely consider it! I believe the organizer for Mile Marker-1 is planning to run these each qtr - I think they'll restart these in Oct, after the rain/hurricane season.

My best run at Dade-Collier was 158 in my SC Lotus Elise at the ~1.5 mile mark. So fun!!

Did you stop at 1 mile or go beyond? I wonder what you would hit if you did the whole runway (excluding braking zone)?

The 150/153 was taken @ the 1mi mark. I did hit 157 if I kept my foot on for it past the 1 mile marker. Definitely fun.

Kudos to you for doing this. Interesting to see how slippery the Boxster is compared to cars with similar hp

Question

Nice pictures! Are you running 265/40/18 rear tire? Were you in 5th gear a 1 mile mark?

The wheels are 19x10 (rear) with 275/30. Redline in 5th put me about 80 - 100yds before the mile marker. I had to go to 6th to finish. I can tell you at about 157/158mph (on the speedo), the acceleration goes into snail pace - the tach needle doesn't quite have that vigorous/explosive sweeping motion from about 6300rpm on. Car still very stable and relatively quite (with top up).

Check out the link of the link right below my pictures... or look for the Mile marker picture thread in Florida forum.
