Question regarding shifter of 987 Boxster S

In my 997 C4s, when I'm in neutral and nudge the shifter to either the left or right it springs back into place (like most other cars), though in my father's 987 Boxster S, when I'd do that the shifter remains either to the right or left without springing back into place... Is that normal for the Boxster or is the some sort of problem? Thanks ..

That's not normal. Usually springs back to the middle.

Thanks for the info..
That's interesting... I wonder what happened to it as my dad never noticed anything unusual..
My guess it couldn't be repaired and the transmission would have to be replaced

I don't think you'll need a new transmission. Probably just a loose shifter mechanism, which can be replaced rather easily.

bmw had this problem notoriously with the e36 series (including mine). they called it a detente (sp?) spring which is itself really cheap. the downside was that the spring is inside the transmission housing so even the dealerships wouldn't fix it because they'd have to open up the trans. the dealership solution if you were still under warranty was to give you a new trans and send the old one back to getrag.

if you have any warranty left, milk it for all it worth. otherwise, it can be a very expensive labor project to fix a really cheap part.
