Help Me Choose the Best Car for My Uses

Of all the out of the door Porsche's, which are best for autocrossing?

My main use will be having fun. Summer car. I generally enjoy a softer ride but there are times I put the hammer to use.

Sometimes I think a basic non-S might be better for A-X and overall enjoyment. With the skinny tires, seems like a no brainer.

Other times I want an "S" variant to give me the get up and go.

I want to increase my driving skills.

I've been looking at the 2004 anniverary 986 Boxter S 550 Spyder with ~20,000 miles and several 987 Boxsters. Cayman are still out of my price range.

Been hoping for under $20,000 complete but tempted to increase that a mite and get something newer.

While I have a CTT for my daily driver, I'd really like something that I could learn heel-toe and manual skills and weight shifting aspects.

I tend to keep my cars for a while, not mod them much if at all (just radar and wheel sets for my current DD) and want a feel good car in a happy color.

Trembler is infamous around these parts
I was in a similar position and opted for a base 987 boxster for autocrossing. Base model puts you in B stock whereas S model bumps you up to A stock class. IMO the base model has plenty of power to compete in B stock class. Sure, I've considered upgrading to an S model but for a DD and AX car I can't justify the price. Try to find a base 987 as I think you'll be much happier than an S 986. Autocrossing in the boxster is a blast!!! Have fun!

Good points! I am a novice. I need to check on the A-X rules. Certainly, I don't need to compete with those fellows with years of experience and those who prep their cars only for autocrossing.

Thanks for the response/tip. It helps as I don't have the opportunity to drive the cars living on the fringes up here.

In fact, I haven't seen a Boxster A-Xing up here yet. I've seen one CaymanS.

Our courses tend to be rather tight and most folks don't go much over 40 mph except the GTR. He hits 60-65!

[Gee, I might hit 45 in my CTT. Folks say they love watching me because I go so fast, they think I'm never going to be able to stop. But for those huge brakes, I'd have trouble stopping the 5,800 pound beast. I never look at my instruments.]

Now, my questions are as to:

Basic Boxster

5-speed or 6-speed?

PASM or not?

I'm not sure I can find a 987 I can afford. Certainly 986 are affordable.
