Cayman vs Cayman S for daily driving.

Hello everyone!

My family has been a BMW family for the longest time. We've owned everything from a 98' 740 to a '09 650i to a '11 X5. I was looking at the M3(still not out of the question), but with gas prices, the prices for a year would equal the extra cash I pay for the Cayman S. I want to break the cycle!

Here is my question. My car will not be tracked and will not be raced in any sort of way. Daily driven to and from work and school. Winter is a concern(of course with proper tires). If I get a Cayman, I will load it up with PASM, PDK,LSD,Carbon Fiber Package,Convenience Package, Infotainment Package, Sport Seats. 19' Wheels, Heated Seats, Heated Steering Wheel,Sport Chrono Plus,Sport Exhaust.

If I shoot for the Cayman S, it'll just be: Convenience Package, Infotainment Package,PDK, Sport Chrono Plus, and PASM, and Heated Seats

What do you folks think? Again, this car will just be a daily driver and will probably never see the track. I'll be going to school, work, and back home.I will be shooting to order sometime this fall. I'll be riding my bike till I see what 2012 holds. Which one would you folks choose?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I hear MY 2012's are already scheduled for production this spring, no changes ASFAIK. How long do you plan on keeping it? If only for a few years, you could try a non-S and upgrade next time around if you find it underpowered. If keeping it a long time, might as well get the S, if it was me, I'd always be second guessing myself. You will get most of the difference in price back when you sell it.
I'm planning on ordering one soon, will most likely get an S with PDK and lease it for 3 years. I've been tempted to buy an '09 CPO, but there are very few out there and they are still in the mid 50's.
I've been burned by owning German cars out of warranty as well as minor fender benders killing resale value. I figure if I lease, I won't have to worry about little things like rock chips too.

I have a 2007 base and 2006 S. Both are excellent cars and are as similar as they are different. I prefer my base for all occasions, except on the highway where the sheer power of the S is a hoot at high-speed acceleration. The base has an awe exhaust and it sounds amazing. If I had to sell one it would definitely be the S. I like the gear box and clutch a lot more on the base than the S. I have a 60 mile commute each way everday, honestly both cars are perfectly fine as a D.D. I average 20.6mpg in the s and 24.5mpg in the base.

As a sole daily driver I would go with the Base Cayman, I did. 265hp is more than enough power to drive around town. With less HP as others have said you get to push through the gears more. I decided on and purchased a 2010 Base Cayman with PDK, Sport Chrono and a bunch of other creature comfort options. If I l want to play around on some back roads I just switch on the Sport or Sport Plus, That is plenty for me.

I just recently picked up a CS about a month and a half ago as my daily and the drive to work has been fun

I'm in the same boat, probably will never track the car but maybe once a year, if that...

I'll probably get an extended warranty.

That's what I am leaning towards! It gives me the opportunity to get some more creature comforts.

The CF would make the interior look sexy, though. :P

Interesting replies. As its always hard to resist "more power" but as you stated, if your never utilizing it then what's the point? Might as well get it loaded up with all the goodies and enjoy the comfort aspect of it while still being able to stretch the legs on a back road or two.

To be honest, I probably could do without the extra HP since its my daily, but who knows.... once in awhile though, especially coming into a freeway onramp I might might give it a little go .

I think knowing that the extra power is there is good when you need it. I only drive it on sport mode on the weekends otherwise, I can't really use the sport when driving to and from work even on the carpool lane

If the $$$ allows, get the S. (I got a used one) I was going to pass up the S since I really wanted a white CS but I couldnt find one that was within my budget and there were some White "base" ones. But I just couldnt pass up the deal on the black CS I got. Either way, you'll love it!!!

Good luck!!!
