engine chatter after start-up
I thought I would share what I just learned.
This is my first Porsche with a flat 6 engine, so the engine chatter after starting it up was not a noise I was familiar with. So I asked my service rep. at the dealership to explain the source of the noise. He said it was the hydraulic valve lifters. Specificly the exhaust lifters. He pointed out that since the exhaust side of the cylinders is on the bottom, the exhaust side valve lifter drains most of the oil out of it when off. And that at start-up those lifter bodies need a little time for the oil pressure to get oil back into them and then run normally. Until then, the lifters will chatter and is completely normal.
On a seperate occation, I read somewhere that is one of the reasons for the use of 0w40 oil. The thin oil when cold will be able to fill the lifters (as well as the entire engine) faster when cold. This will reduce engine wear which most occurs at start-up.
This may be very basic stuff for lots of you, but others might find it enlightening too.

Porsche recommends 0W-40 / 5W-40 / or 5W-50 depending on the climatic conditions you live in.

Porsche also recommends Mobil 1 0w-40 changed at 15,000 miles but not for our benefit.

There are loads of threads related to oil out there. The conclusion I have come to after reading is that an oil with a 5W-40 spec is superior to the 0W-40 if the temperature doesn't get too cold. An oil with an API rating of SL rather than SM is also touted to offer some advantages related to wear protection. But, to the OP's original point...my 987-1 now has Mobil 1 0W-40 API SM SL/CF and there is no audible chatter at startup. The next change (6 month interval) will none the less go to Castrol 5W-40 API SL.

Yes I know and I'm sure that has a lot to do with IMS issues that's why I change mine at 5k or less , with track time around 3k

o-40 mobil one or another synth. Gets the oil to the lifters faster. They should not leak down between starts so the issue is probably a bad lifter or lifters. BTW they have a check valve to eliminate leakage
