Audi owner here, considering boxster.....

Hi guys, audi owner here and currently looking at a 2003 boxster w 53,000 miles. What can i expect from a reliability standpoint from 50-100,000? Also, is there an extended warranty from 50-100 and which one is recommended?

Ive owned two boxsters from that generation and two caymans. Each car was extremely bulletproof (with the Caymans being even better IMO). The only issue I ever encountered was an RMS leak on one of the older gen boxsters.

What about this "engine failure" issue? It seems 27% of boxsters have this issue and if it happens to the car out of warranty then it looks like it will be in the neighborhood of 15k to fix.

I think the only sane way to own one is to have a warranty. Any recommendations?

AAA sells an extended warranty issued by Mercury Insurance, $1300 7 years 100K miles directly thru Mercury. LN Engineering sells an upgraded IMS bearing for about $550. This bearing is what causes catastrophic engine failure.

I have an A6 and a Boxster S and so far the Boxster has been more reliable. Also recently one of the car magazines praised the boxster as most reliable European premium car while Audi and Jaguar got least reliable

I'm not sure where you got your numbers. Any manufacturer with a 27% failure rate would be out of business quickly. Some have failed. I've only heard of a couple from forums - where information (misinformation) spreads like the wind. As to the OP's question about extended repair policies I believe I've seen all providers willing to provide them easily up to 60,000 miles at sign up and some beyond that.

get a 2005+ boxster s. they are going around $25-30k now.

or better yet, look into a 2002-2004 996 in the 33-40k range.

you'll have a lot more power and much better looking car for a little more money
