Thumbs down Porsche cutting corners by charging to pain parts on 981

I find it ridiculous that Porsche is now charging to paint parts on the 981 that were painted on 987.

They are now 'options'

Lower part of Wing Mirror painted: $605
Side Air Intake painted: $675
Rear Apron painted: $640

Total: $1,920

That's nearly $2K to have things painted that were painted on the current model that you're now been charged for.

Things that should come painted, not crazy little exclusive upgrades like painting the roll bars or headlight cleaning system covers.

Really cheap on Porsche's part. Not impressed.

I always thought that those things should've been charged for. I don't think "cutting corners" is a right phrase for these type of things. After all, these are just cosmetics that do not affect performance of the vehicle. Maybe I am too optimistic (and perhaps, you are too pessimistic).

Of course, no one is going to say, "I'd LOVE to pay for these things because it is a Porsche." Very subjective matter.

Just to play devil's advocate.........you pay about $1,900 for wheels painted black instead of silver like on my CR.

I think you are missing the point. These parts were designed to be normally black 'plastic' on the 981. They are giving you the option to have them painted. I was given the choice to have the black attachment on my 987 Spyder mirror painted (I passed) for around $550. On the rest of the items you mentioned, I had no choice from what I was given - the Spyder rear apron was black plastic and Spyder's side air vents are silver/grey on my model. On the Cayman R, the latter were gloss black! So as the models evolved in the 987 series during its long production run, you saw them doing some of these painted options already. What model & year do you have?

With this new platform (981), Porsche is just allowing you to customize further the look of your vehicle. I think that is progress!

Saludos,
Eduardo

it doesn't look bad with these unpainted. there is a general trend to have black parts mixed with painted colors these days. i wouldn't bother with the options.

If you order the black option on the lightweight wheels on the CR, that is the price Porsche charges. I offer up as a point of reference to show it is not something new to the 991 or 981 generation.

Maybe I just see the glass as half empty (that is just who I am). But to me, it does sound like they are cutting corners in typical porsche fashion: charging more for basic features that come standard on other marques.

Porsche can charge whatever they choose. It's up to the buyer to decide if he/she wants to pay... DIY guys/gals like myself would "sort it out" themselves..

you would be crazy

Now - if you paid Porsche paint these black parts black - I would think you are craaaaaaaazy.

But if you wanted to match your crazy paint to sample orange and you dished out the extra $1900, I would have respect.

Being in the body shop business, I was almost offended at what they charge for some of the parts. $300 for headlight washer nozzles?? Really??

My shop is a collision shop but we do specialized paint jobs. I have a $20K paint job on a ’67 Corvette for Rick Hendrick, we just did an original lacquer job for one of his ’63 split window Corvettes.

Having said that, I paid the money to have the wings painted on the lower part of the mirrors. In order to paint those wings, you have to remove the mirrors. To remove the mirrors on the new body style, you must pull the glass which means unbolting the outer skin on the door. That’s too much work on a brand spanking new car.

I even paid for the roll bar to be painted... that one I’m sure would be fairly easy but I’m impatient and want to see it already done.

The only thing I’m painting is the trim on the dash (the horizontal pieces of moldings), the washer nozzles and the air intake grates on the quarter panels.

I did however order the wheels in silver. Rather than pay 1400 to have them powder coated black, I can get them done for next to nothing if not free.

Anyway, I think some of the paint prices are ridiculous but it is what it is...

Are you saying you'd have to pull the whole door apart if say someone broke one of the mirrors?

YUP... sure am. Unlike the older Boxsters that had the mirror in the corner of the door above the belt moulding, the new ones have it in the door skin similar to a Cayenne. (ironic part is we have one at the shop right now on the frame machine. In order to take it apart to paint the door, the skin had to come off.

Now you know why I’m willing to pay $600+ for a couple of pieces of stupid plastic painted in the color of the car.

It’s not that we can’t take the skin apart to do it, I just have a problem pulling a door skin (NOT an interior door trim panel) off the car when it’s brand new.... next thing you know, it squeaks, etc, etc.

painting parts were always an options in HK unless it's standard with the car.

That seems to be the norm for any car not built by the US. Whether you have the choice or not isn’t the problem, it’s how much they’re charging for some of that stuff.

But whatcha gonna do?? Either do it yourself or pay the man. I picked and chose my battles and got what I wanted.

The rest of it I’ll take care of it myself.
