Widest wheel/tire combo on new 981?

I realize the car isn’t even out yet but does anyone have an idea of what wheel/tire combo can be used on the new Boxster?

I ask because going with the 20” Carrera wheels will cost almost 1600 bucks.

If I order the 19’s, I can use that 1600 bucks towards something I may like better.

Granted, at that point, I’d have to incur the cost of the new tires to upgrade back up to 20’s but at least it’s be something I really like.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mark

PS. What brand tires come on the new Boxster? Are they good or do they need to be upgraded also?

The Boxster S has Pirelli P Zero as noted in this article: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...-s-first-drive ; this is a really good tire; however, I like Michelin PSS better.

The tire sizes for 19-in are (front and rear) 235/40R19 and 265/40R19; and for 20-in are 235/35R20 and 265/35R20 so they have the same width.

I don't like the two available Carrera wheel options as they are flush wheels. I think a 20-in concave wheel would look much better.

The 19-in Boxster S wheel looks very good and uniquely Boxster S. Whereas the Carrera wheel options are just too Carrera and I believed that too many people have it. I figured that if I want to upgrade to 20-in later, with group buy discount available on this forum, I should be able to get really good wheels and tires for around $3500 or less.

My Boxster S on order has 19-in.

A few thoughts...

1) I agree, the 19” Boxster S wheel looks uniquely Boxster’ish. However, I’m not sure I want that. IMO, the car’s appearance has changed enough that I don’t want to associate it with an older model. (nothing wrong with the older model, it’s just if we’re going for a new bold look, then I want a new bold look on all of it)

2) I wonder what the widest tire you can put on the back. If we’re going to upgrade wheels and tires, a tire a little fatter in the back would look good.

3) Though the 20’s look better IMO, will the sidewall be too thin? I realize it’ll handle better and have less tire roll but I don’t want to drive over a quarter and tell if it’s heads or tail because it rides so rough.

4) Lastly, is it safe to assume that the 19” and 20” tires are the same overall height? (therefore wheel gap should be the same on either selection)

Thanks,

Mark

The OEM rear wheel size is 9.5 J 20ET 45. The ideal upgrade tire size for the rear are 295/30R20 or 305/30R20, the minimum rim width are 10" and 10.5" respectively...so it will NOT fit. Even if you able to mount the tire without breaking the wheel you still have to deal with the offset.

The 20-in wheel is 35-series, with the current OEM width it is not too thin. It will ride fine but if you worry then make sure you have PASM. I do agree that 20-in looks good.

They are the same height. I am surprised that there is no tire size calculator on this site. Here is one from my other home page http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12

Okay, so would it be safe to assume you could put a 10” wheel on the back with a 295?

A 295 would be 30mm wider (just over an inch for us on this side of the pond...lol)

That might be a happy medium. 9.5’s on the front and 10’s on the rear. I’m not sure I would want to make the front tire any wider. Porsche engineered the car to have a certain tire for a reason, I could see a wider tire up front changing the way it handles. I don’t see an issue with another inch in the rear.

I know you said that the 305 won’t fit on the rear but will an 11” rim. There is a seller with 11” rear wheels
Front Size: 20" x 8.5
Rear Size: 20" x 11
Bolt Pattern: 5 x 130

that says they will fit a boxster. Is that even possible or does he not know what he’s talking about.

Thanks,

Mark

i am not sure what you mean by upgrade but imho if you are looking for racetrack use why not R compound ,stock tire size on used rims. you can swap out for street or track. best of both worlds.....a nice DD ...then ...race tires. if you are looking for [no offense] poser rim/tire combo go with aftermarket blingers

I won’t be tracking the car much so I’m not worried about using R compounds right now.

The reason I asked is because I just don’t really like the looks of the Carrera S wheels. The black wheels (IMO) look much better I would think.

No offense about the poser comment, I’ll flat out tell you that I just want to change wheels for aesthetic reasons only. If I decide to start tracking the car, I’ll get some real rubber, R compounds won’t cut it at the track. I outgrew RE 11’s and Advan’s a long time ago.

PS. Back to the original question, will 11” rims with a 40mm offset fit in the rear?

Exclamation

From 9.5/20ET45 to 11/20ET40 you're looking at 14mm less inside clearance and 24mm extend out. Below are the wheel specs for all the available options for the Boxster S.

Front: 8.0 J x 19 ET 57 with 235/40 ZR 19 tyres; Rear: 9.5 J x 19 ET 45 with 265/40 ZR 19 tyres Boxter S
Front: 8.0 J x 20 ET 57 with 235/35 ZR 20 tyres; Rear: 9.5 J x 20 ET 45 with 265/35 ZR 20 tyres Carrera S
Front: 8.0 J x 20 ET 57 with 235/35 ZR 20 tyres; Rear: 9.5 J x 20 ET 45 with 265/35 ZR 20 tyres Carrera Classic
Front: 8.5 J x 20 ET 57 with 235/35 ZR 20 tyres. Rear: 10 J x 20 ET 50 with 265/35 ZR 20 tyres Sport Techno

Take a look at the last one, Sport Techno. The rear is 10 in and the offset is 50. If you calculate the offset you will see that all the extra width is pushed in instead of out. My educated guess is the size you suggest may rub against the fender, but this is just a guess as I don't have my hand on a physical car yet. Ask me again on or after June 30th after I have my car and I will let you know for sure.

BTW, if you decide to upgrade and dump the CS wheels let me know, if I can afford it I will take it off your hand. It's nice to have the 20 for DD and the 19 for track.

So it sounds to me that the loss of 14mm in the back isn’t going to hurt but the 24 outwards might rub. Rather than take that chance, perhaps I need to look at a 10” rim with the same measurements.

That would keep the outside of the lip in the stock position. (because I DO NOT want it to stick out and rub the qtrs... forget the fact it might cut the tire, it will look like crap IMO)

Does that make sense?

What’s a fair price for a set of the Carrera S rims with new tires. (take-offs)

Is 2500 a fair price? I haven’t seen but a few for sale the seller was asking 5400 (I know, stupid) Does that sound fair cause I’d like to put them up for sale while I still have a week or so to make changes.

Lemme know.

Okay, I’ve decided on the wheel I want...

Roderick RW-5 19" Matte Black

I can live with it in 19’s or 20’s

Now, the problem is they only come in an 11” wheel. Does anyone know a wheel similar in looks in a 10” width?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

Got your PM and answered it, figured I'd chime in here as well.

The 981 has very similar - if not exactly the same wheel fitment as the 987. You can run up to a 295/305 rear tire along with an 11" rear wheel.

The wheels you initially posted are Ruger Mesh in 20x8.5F and 20x11 - we have those available as well. The Rodericks are solely available in 19".

Ideally, on a 10" rear wheel you want to run a 265 to 285 at most, you need a 295 to run an 11".
