Boxster Ordering Decisions/Questions

Greetings all, I'm new to 6SpeedOnline. My current car is a 2004 Subaru WRX STi and it's time to buy him a summer playmate. I've always lusted after Porsches and I have the go-ahead from the boss to finally buy one this year, or most likely, next year. I have a weird superstition about model years ending in 4. I'm guessing that the Boxster, being newly redesigned for 2013, won't change much for 2014. So I've been going through the configurator and have some questions for those that have ordered/received their cars already.
  1. Can anyone explain the difference between the Platinum and the GT Silver Metallic paint? The GT looks a little lighter but it's hard to tell on the screen. Has anyone seen it in person? Is the GT silver worth $2K more?
  2. Is there any other difference between the Sports seat and the Plus besides the shoulder wings on the Plus?
  3. Can anyone that's tall (ie 6'2" +) comment on head- and leg-room?
That's it for now. Thanks for any answers. I'll be visiting here often to satisfy my Boxster cravings until 2014.

William

GT Silver and Platinum are actually very similar. I have seen them back to back and GT Silver is slightly lighter in color while at the same time having a deeper lustre. It's difficult to explain, but GT Silver looks better. If it's worth the extra price? I'm not sure... It's not a huge difference.

The Sport Plus seats have better lateral support in all parts, not just the shoulder area. I also find them more comfortable, so it was a must have for my 981. I have tried the standard seats in another 981 and I think the Sport Plus seats are really worth the extra cost. They also look better
The seats are identical to the 991, so you can try them at a dealer in those cars as well.
I also noticed that if you're not getting full leather interior, you still get a better quality leather on the Sport Plus seats than on the standard seats!

I'm 6'1" myself, I have no problem at all. Porsches are generally good for tall people. I never had to move the seat back to end position. In fact, when attending the Porsche Driver training I wrote about in anoter thread, the instructors moved me a few notches forward... most people are sitting too far from the wheel and the pedals!

The Platinum Silver has a champagne hue to it. While the GT Silver is a real silver. Is it worth the premium.....thats up to you.

The GT Silver color was introduced with the Carrera GT, so it's really a premium color, while the Platinum is more "standard".

Below are some pics of the chairs, Sport on the left and Sport Plus on the right.
You can see that the difference is more than the shoulder wings.

To me, the GT silver is instantly recognizable and as others have mentioned, was first introduced with the Carrera GT supercar. Cannot explain it, but definitely looks "premium" over other silvers.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers. Especially Kelderek for the observations about PASM and other things from your drivers event.

I guess I'm going to have to see the GT Silver in person to decide. I did finally find the detailed explanations about each option, including the seats, on the Porsche website.

I'll post more questions here as I think them up.

The only thing I wish they had done different for those seats was add some pass through holes for harnesses.

For that, you'll have to shell out some money for the Sport Bucket Seats!

With Sport Bucket Seats, I mean these. Probably great on the track, but a little too extreme for a DD, in my opinion.

They were recently added to the configurator and it appears that they are not available for delivery until early September.

I don't know how I missed it but those are awesome seats. I have to guess it will cost an arm and a leg for a set though?

Stix: Also note that ONLY the 'plus' seats have MEMORY settings and that apparently is the only way you can get the rear view mirror (right on US market) to tilt for parking!

The 'Sport Buckets' have been added to the option list available to customers in Europe and some other ROW markets on both the 981 and 991 models. However, they are not yet available in the US. In general, US dealers are very negative about ordering these seats for cars meant for general inventory. If you follow the dealer order history (as opposed to customer's special-ordered cars), you will see majority of US dealers bypassed that option and ordered 'comfort' seats or leather 'sport' seats on the few models where the 'sport buckets' could be ordered (e.g. Spyder, Cayman R, GTS, .2 gt3's) in the recent past. On these models, the 'sport buckets' were available as a no cost option (a $7K+/10K+ seats in aftermarket). Dealers found these seats a 'hard sell'! So the US dealer network is NOT clamoring for PCNA to let them have this 'sport bucket' option, to the detriment of many sport-minded customers in the US! And that is probably the reason why you don't see them yet in the US configurator!

Eduardo

Oh yeah, I did see those. They were in a 911 on the showroom floor. My SA told me they wouldn’t be out till later this year.

They’re GREAT seats but there’s no way they’ll take the abuse of a DD. The bolsters are high up and not only will they wear out sooner than normal (from sliding on the bolsters) but they’re difficult to get in and out of.

When I had my JCW, I ordered a set of Recaro JCW seats. That was about as extreme a seat as I wanted for a DD.

And then I had these custom made to match the front seats.

Anyway, those seats are great but IMO, might be a bit much for a DD.

I have the Sport bucket seats in my Cayman R(Daily Driver) and find the seats to be extremely comfortable. I would have a hard time getting another Porsche without them. In my 2010 base Cayman I had the power comfort seats and they were not near as comfortable as the Sport Buckets. I Weight 172 and am 5'6" if that matters. Getting in and out of the seats are not as hard as others claim, they are just different.
