Question about boxster S 2014

Hey we just got a 2014 boxster S and I am pretty sure I read this is normal for porsche because of caster/camber setting but sometimes when the wheel is turned full lock either way and you are backing up or even going forward there is a clunking sound that comes.

Dealer said this is normal for all porsche because of how they set the caster/camber but I wanted to double check because this is very weird. Also it happens way more now in the colder climate than when it was warm. Also just in general when turning the wheel I can hear squealing like something is rusty though I think that is more attributed to driving the car in 28 degree weather with summer tires which is a no no.

Hey man. Yes very common and more pronounce during warm up and in the cold weather (apparently it's even more dramatic on 911s). I was told a lot had to do with the pirellis that are on the car. I will be going with Michelin PSPs when I change the tires out as I have heard the "popping" is reduced/less pronounce.

+1 for me. In fact, it was cold for Florida at 44 this morning and heard it backing up after working out at the club pre sunrise.

Per Porsche-

"Tire scrubbing is a lateral movement of the tire over the surface on which it rests. There are numerous factors involved in tire scrubbing, several are described below.

Steering geometry is designed so that for a given steering angle appropriate tire slip angles are produced. Tire slip angles are required so that necessary tire cornering forces will be generated as vehicle speed increases. Reducing slip angles will have the effect of reducing cornering forces and thus reducing vehicle handling capabilities.

Cold tires do not grip as well as warm tires. Cold tires also do not deform to absorb lateral loads as easily as warm tires. Tires with a low profile also do not deform as much as a tire with a higher profile. A cold low profile tire is more rigid than a warm high profile tire. So, cold, low profile tires can slip more easily than a warm, high profile tire.

Larger tires have a larger contact patch. More energy is used in turning a larger tire, so a higher steering load is the result. Larger contact patches mean that more energy from the higher steering loads will be released as a tire slips.

The amount of energy released is sufficient to create noise as the tire laterally scrubs over the road surface and as it moves through the suspension components.

The tire scrub may feel like a slight dragging of the tire due to the lateral movement of the tire over the road surface. This is a normal condition. No repairs are necessary."

Yes this is normal on the new 981 boxster and caymans. Been discussed a lot on the planet 9 forums. General consensus is it just a fact of how the cars and alignment are setup. :/ I find it annoying but based on the angle the tires make at full lock you will get "hop" on them at slow speeds.

I have never owned a boxter / cayman but I recently got a 2014 cayman S and I have to agree that this sound is pretty annoying - I have almost never heard this on my 911 and my panamera....
