Retrofitting a Non-PASM Cayman with Active Suspension

A long-term TPC Racing customer has been very happy with the TPC stage 2 turbo kit and stage 3 suspension package for his 2010 Cayman for some time now. However, as someone who regularly tracks his car, he is always looking to take both his and his Cayman's performance one step further.

He began by upgrading his engine with the TPC Racing 9A1 Engine Rebuild Kit to withstand more continuous power and extensive track time. More on this engine rebuild can be found here

Next it was time to get to work on replacing his mechanical track-oriented adjustable suspension with the high tech DSC Sport/Tractive DDA active suspension setup. This combination provides the fastest and most dynamic range of any electronic damper system on the market. This setup allows for the use of softer springs for an improved ride, while pushing the boundaries of top-level track performance.

Fully assembled Tractive DDA front coilover for the 987:

Now it's time to remove the mechanical suspension:

Next, we mount the top hat and set the coilover. All Tractive DDA shocks now come with Swift springs, the only spring company – to our knowledge – that manufactures springs from wire specifically intended for autosport use.

Installed Tractive DDA front left coilover on the 987:

After installing the second front coilover, it's time for the rear. The rear coilovers are a little more time-consuming to install, as they require you to remove some of the interior paneling to get to the top hat.

After installing the coilovers, Marco sets the ride height and ensures all the cables are connected properly and fitted with any necessary extensions.

Stay tuned for more on the project, including some shots of how we wire the stand alone DSC module.

Owner Mike Levitas was so impressed with the ride quality provided by the Tractive DDA that he brought his 2011 Boxster Spyder in the next day for the same package! The few who have had the pleasure of driving this car have described it as the most comfortable ride out of any Boxster Spyder they have driven. This makes this a particularly critical test subject for the Tractive DDA dampers. The goal here is to maintain the ride quality and comfort, while improving performance.

With the current coilover kit (non-OEM), there was a decent amount of contact with the tires when tracking the car. We don't expect this to be an issue with the Tractive DDA

Out with the old!

Mike and Marco finishing up the four corners of the car.

Did we mention we saved a combined 25 lbs. from the corners of the car?!

The DSC Sport/Tractive DDA setup is currently being run on the TPC Racing/DSC Sport #36 car in the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Presented by Yokohama. The TPC Racing team will be bringing the 2011 Boxster Spyder to Watkins Glen this weekend showcase the same technology available for production street/track cars.
