X51 for our Cayman
#31
Finally.
CaymanS arrived this past Saturday. It is on my schedule for yanking the engine early next week for the X51. I ordered the light flywheel and clutch for it today. Sorry it took so long for an update. The car just arrived. We ordered it semi stripped not equipped.
Pics to follow.

I do not have them in my possession, but we know what they need to work in the 997/987 wheel carriers. We brought in a 987S and yanked it all apart (suspension wise) when the CaymanS was annouced, knowing full well they would run the same suspension. The difference is minimal and easy to correct. The opening for the shock is a few mm's bigger and will require 4 machined parts to make a "stock" 996/986 Moton Club Sport work without reworking the whole shock body. FYI: 996 GT3 street and race run the same size "whole" in the wheel carrier as the street 997/987 cars (from what we have found)
I'll try to dig up some pics we shot while we were documenting the 987S. We also had access to one of Porsches 987 "test mules" that Porsche Motorsports used to test the CaymanS engine and transmissions.

We will start pulling everything out tomorrow evening. Full documentation with digital pics. We finally had a "somewhat" free weekend to take our time. Only 3 events happening that we wont attend..ha ha (POC Streets event/Long Beach Grand Prix/Pahrump event.

Let the fun begin. The first thing we did was determine what needed to be yanked from the "crate engine" prior to install in Cayman. This is pretty straight forward. We have past experience with 996 engines into Boxsters..soo.. no brainer. See pics Follow along at home.. its easy!!

In the pics above we removed the exhaust and muffler hangers, removed the intake manifold, and removed the 997 engine mount.
In the pics below we start with flipping the intake around for the Cayman. This intake is much taller than the Cayman/Boxster intake. We know this from the other conversions. Most shops lower the 996 engine in the chassis around 20mm's or so. Our plan is to use/make a different engine cover. When you drop the engine, it really really makes keeping headers under the car difficult. We would rather leave the engine UP in the car instead of dropping it down. We will need to flip the fuel rails also from side to side.

Something else we did tonight: I test fit some 19x11 wheels with a 315 tire on it, onto a 987. These came straight from a 02 996TT. Direct bolt on. Check it out. This means you can put A LOT of tire under the CaymanS and the 987's.
One more thing: I also test fit some 986 stock rear 17 with a 275 Hoosier road race tire on the 987.. NO problem. Note: this is a stock 987 with PASM. Our shop 986Spec car with 275's and coil overs requires a 5mm spacer behind it to keep the tire/wheel from hitting the lower perch on the coil overs. This will be the case with the CaymanS and the 987's also with 17's/18's/19's and coil overs.

I'll slip this one in and see if anyone notices...
NEW 4 way adjustable rear 986 bar with NEW heim joint drop links AND double adjustable rear toe link.
We got really tired of blowing out factory drop links with the stupid plastic socket and ball.. this will cure it!!
Also.. how to use a torque wrench on EVERYTHING...and install a GT3 5 way adjustable bar in the front of your 986 with new drop links in place.. ha ha
Oh yeah.. and a good shot of the factory GT3 adjustable control arms for your Boxster
