Cayman w/997GT3 engine vs. 997GT3
I mean.. it will fit wont it?
Now that Cayman's are hitting the $40's this is becoming a financial reality for under $100k isnt it? Therfore, which one would really be superior?
Midengine mod, or purpose built design with engine in the rear..?

The only thing I have ever heard about putting a GT3 or turbo engine in a boxster or cayman was that it won't fit because of their dry slump lubrication... I may be wrong, but I remember something along those lines.

I don't know if it will "fit", but it won't connect. The Cayman transmission won't bolt up. I have read of a conversion or two in the past, but I don't know how the transmission was dealt with--probably a heavily cusomized GT3 transmission. They were surely custom and a lot of coin.
I think the question about suitability of the GT3 engine or any engine as an aftermarket conversion can only be answered by the person who is writing the check. IMO, a Boxster, Cayman, Carrera, Carrera Cab, or C4 are all suitable chasis. Just make more sense if it came from the factory that way, but those who favor a mid-engine are not given many options.
I don't think you could say either configuration would be superior. The 911s have quite a good following and plenty of top drivers. Either platform has its advantages and disadvantages.

The issue is that the GT3 engine uses the 964/993 crank. This has a different bolt pattern than the 996/986 line. The bellhousing on the 986/987/Cayman is too small for the 996/997 flywheel, but this isn't an issue with the 3.4/3.6/3.8 swaps as the flywheel from the Boxster/Cayman bolts up. So to use the GT3 you need a custom flywheel or modify the 996/997 trans by flipping the ring gear so you don't have 6 reverse gears. Don't know if this is possible but is was on the 915 trans when they were used in 914s.
The other issue is the integrated dry sump of the 964/993 based GT3 engine, this would require a bit of fabrication in order to relocate the oil tank away from the motor as it is mounted on the GT3 as there is no room.
So with all of the issues, plus the cost of a GT3 engine, seems to make more sense to just drop in the 3.8, especially if it is going to be a street car, now if it is a track car, the GT3 conversion might make sense.

Yo Mr iLLM3, small (bulletin board) world we live in. Quite the **** storm over on F-chat, eh? lol Those prancing pony guys are just a little too smug for my taste, which is why it is gratifying to bring them down to reality every now and then. Plus, that board just has good variety of thought on it.
Good luck piloting that rocket ship of yours. Keep it between the lines!
I would gladly take either GT3 motor, thank you very much. As you said, the 996 variant is still an amazing motor, and totally under-rated, from what I have heard.

Anyway yea the 996 GT3 3.6 is amazing, i mean it is essentially the same motor in the 997 GT3 right now, just re-done a bit, a swap into a Cayman would be AWESOME

@iLLM3, I see you have an April allocation for a GT3. What color? I know I would be majorly psyched, but how do you top a RUF GT2? You aren't worried about it being anti-clamactic?

I don't know if the boxster/cayman is better than the 911 platform since both have significant advantages against each other but I know that the Boxster/Cayman just feels more natural to me, more predictable, light and accurate than the non GT 911's so that's what I will stick with. Power is another issue and it's always something you can fix.

Im waiting to get some good seat time in a 997 GT3 which will happen shortly, i mean i LOVE them, but after some good driving in my RUF lately i am absolutely IN LOVE with the car, if it were slightly modded or not a RUF i probably would have traded for a GT3!
The RUF GT2 has almost NO LAG, sounds like an NA , almost Gallardo like resonance cruising and under acceleration through gear (not wot) , throttle response is crisp and again almost NA like, just the way they set this car up is like having the best of both worlds, almost like a Ferrari F40 characteristics and something i missed with the turbo..
So im ecstatic right now with it, along with its handling, acceleration its mind blowing, i'll be keeping it for a WHILE i know it

Now my question is can you fit the GT3 head on a 3.6 motor and take advantage of the bigger valves and wider porting? Can't have the bottom of the GT3 engine in the boxster without fabrication but how about it's head and peripherials?
