NYC -> Front Plates....A solution....

Has anyone tried making a copy of their license plate and tape it on the front bumper? I hate holes on the front bumper of my cars and this was the first time I had NY Tags....any other suggestions to keep me from gettting tickets until I get the tow hook plate bracket?

This was my solution and cost me less than $5. What did was strap my plates to my air dam and use the soft side of the velcro to protect the bumper from the back of the plate......

Thumbs up Been plateless for Three years now

I have been going plateless for 3 years now and no ticket. If I get a $50 ticket or whatever it costs every few years I'll just chaulk it up to the cost of ownership to keep my car beautiful. Hell, I spend more on cleaning products and polishes... every year than a ticket will ever cost. As I drive around I notice that the vast majority of Porsches, Vettes, and other sports cars go without a front plate. That's just my philosophy, "Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead!"

Very True, but ever since I picked up this vehicle I'd been hit with tickets left and right for front plates. This is especially true when I'm heading into the city through the Midtown Tunnel. It's been almost a month since I got NY Tags and I have 9 tickets for no front plates. 5 of which are from the gratified toll collectors at the midtown tunnel.

I just moved back to NY from SoCal last March 2006. I live on Long Island and I never take my Boxster into the city. Also, it's not my daily driver, so I have a big advantage there too. At least in Suffolk county the Police are not at all aggressive about enforcing the front plate rule, nor did they when I lived in CA (at least not in Ventura county). Typically I drive my car out east to the north or south forks or to CapTree, Robert moses, Jones Beach areas along Ocean Parkway along the south shore. Thanks for the heads up on Toll booths. When I go to NJ or PA and have to get off the Island I'll remember to put my front plate on for that ride.

I have to ask this question because it begs to be asked. Why did you keep going back to the Midtown tunnel toll booth without a front plate after the first ticket, but cretainly not after the second ticket?

Thumbs up Here is a better solution for a front License plate

I am also a member of the Corvette forum. There is a company called Top Flight Reproductions that makes a quick easy-on-and-easy-off removable license plate bracket. It contours slightly with the front bumper as well for a nice-a-look as you can get with a license plate on the front of your car. When you need a plate you just pop it on. For parking in the city, going through tolls, or areas with over enthusiatic LEO's.

For Porsche owners there is good news and bad news. The bad news is that they only make this removable plate holder for Corvettes right now. The good news is that if you have a Boxster S, Cayman, or 911 with the center air intake they believe that the bracket will also work on these Porsches.

If they see as much interest from the Porsche crowd as they do from the Vette crowd I believe they will start making this product especially for Porsches and start advertising on the Porsche forums.

Check them out. I'm ordering mine today.

I live in NJ and take the occasional drive into NY/NYC/Long Island. I have no front plate on a bright orange '77 911 and have never been pulled over or ticketed for it in 9 years of ownership. On the other hand, my front plate was knocked off of my guards red Boxster, and about a week later I was parked at a meter in Brooklyn, on business. I came out to a ticket for no front plate...gotta love the revenue collection system!

Some people keep the front plate in the cabin (behind the passenger seat), and will put it on the dash when needed. This is, admittedly, a hassle.

I have a friend with no front plate on his grey 996TT, and he's received several visits from the peacemakers for the infraction in Princeton, NJ. They nipped that crime wave right in the bud!

Then again, he gets fired up about things like this and asked one of the officers if he could prepay the next 10 tickets now, so he doesn't have to be constantly hassled.
