Warranty Extension Issues

Hey guys, I have a 2006 Cayenne S. My 2 years of ownership is coming to an end. I want to extend the warranty, which has to be done every year by my porsche workshop. I have to pay 4900AED (US$1350) so to protect myself from those unforseen problems in my cayenne in the future.

Anyways they do a full inspection on the car before they can cover the warranty after my 2 years end. I got a call and my service advisor said I need to change the rear and front brakes which comes to a total of 3500AED (US$950) but there is still 25% of wear and tear left. He said the warning light will show once its 15% wear and tear of brake pads and disc. But my question is my car has only done 24,000kms. The brakes were fine.

Lastly my other issue is he says the tyres are worn out. He asking for 4000AED (US$1100) to change the tyres. He said the tyres have to be porsche approved, when i got the car brand new they were fitted with Bridgestones. I have the 18 inch turbo wheels. He said he will let that issue go. I can get brand new tyres for a better price.

Then i asked him are the brakes and tyres covered in the warranty he said NO. So i was thinking to myself why is important for my warranty to be renewed. Other than that the car is in tip top condition.

Now Im being ripped off!!!!! Cause honestly this doesnt not make sense at all.

Any advice would certainly be appreciated.

You will pay these bills in the end, they are not charging you for nothing, the only thing is that they are charging you to "reset" your car to its factory condition so that they can start the warranty. Sounds normal and I suggest you keep going. If you get a transmission problem let's say in the future, it will cost you at least 8 grands, which is nothing compared to what your extended warranty costs...

Cheers mate. I was clarified in more detail about the warranty extension issues. I do not want to pay some adsurd amount if something goes wrong with my car that is why I'm opting for the warranty. But i dont understand how come porsche dont offer the warranty for more than one year whereas i own mercedes and bmws who do the warranty extension upto 4 years. I have given the approval for the work to start.

But what i found most unusal the tyres. Not that im a tyre professional but my CS has only done 24,000km. Seriously can the tyres get worn out that quickly. Keep in mind its mostly driven on weekends.

What i would like to know is, im not happy with the factory installed bridgestone tyres. So what would the best tyres for 18inch turbo wheels on a 2006 CS. Would michelins or continentals be perfect or anyone recommend anything for great and long term on road performance.

Any advice for certainly be appreciated.

Well, in my country here, USA, Porsche cars come with a 4 year factory warranty period, limited to 50k miles. And ships with Continental tires. It's true that Cayenne wears tires that quick, maybe because it's a fast, heavy car. Continental tires are the best among the ones that I used, but I can't say that Michelin is bad since they also manufacture some of the best tires in the market. If you are willing to keep your CS for longer time, it's a good decision to extend the warranty, however, if you don't use your CS in your daily life, then there is less chance for you to have problems with your car.

Hey Canberk, cheers for the information. Been a great help. My CS is a great car and its in mint condition. Yes i guess the tire wear is less since its a heavy and fast car. Here in the middle east we get 2 years warranty only and then there after we have to renew if we want too. But minor problems do occur in my CS like the cornering lights are fused out and cd changer is showing as error. Thats why its good to have the warranty extended just if the unforseen happens. Like a customer whos warranty was over had air suspension problems and he paid quite a big amount for it to get repaired.

I will pop down to my local tyre store and order the continentals for my CS. So you think continentals are great for the 18inch turbo wheels on a 2006 CS?

well my friend, i have 19" Cayenne design wheels and the continentals are very good, however, don't quote me because michelin could be a better tire. Maybe we should wait for few more answers to this thread

I just met with my service advisor. He said no for continentals and yes for michelins. He going to send me information on what tyres and size to put on my CS, which is porsche approved. Cheers mate.

For wear and tear items such as brake pads and tires, i would never go to Porsche...the brake pads are very easy to do...any shop can do them...I just had mine replaced...I paid $250 for EBC Yellowstuff pads and my regular guy whom I have gone to for years installed them for me for $100. He is also in the process of changing my rotors...already did the fronts but we can't seem to find this tool needed to do the rears.

As for tires, go to Tirerack and get them from there....$100 seems kind of high....I'm sure you could find a decent tire for cheaper from there.

As I know extended warranty providers require you to service your car at approved porsche dealerships...

Hey ACE76, unfortunately I wouldnt trust the private garages here in the Middle east to change any of my brake pads and nor im I a qualfied technician. So its best the our porsche dealership does all the technical work. I live in Dubai.

Anyways they have changed the brakes pads, dics left and rights one too. I have ordered myself someone michelins 255/55 for 18inch turbo wheels on my CS. For the warranty to be extended I have to have to get porsche approved tyres on CS. They did a full condition report on the car before everything was perfect except the front brake pads and dics and tyres need to be changed.

But my question is still my car is just under 24,000kms and its a 2006 CS, the tyres cant be worn out that quickly i usually would have thought at 30,000km i would need the tyres replaced.

Thank you for sharing your insights. Cheers mate.

I always thought Dubai was a pretty forward thinking country and that finding a decent shop wouldn't be too hard...but if you don't trust them, then going to Porsche was the right thing to do.

As for the tires, you can't go wrong with Michellin...they always have quality tires to choose from...although, don't get caught in that "Porsche approved" mantra...they will usually suggest a higher price part simply to make more money...there are quite a few tires out there that will run very well on the Cayenne. I know that the 1st gen. Cayennes generally wore out tires very very fast compared to the 2nd gen...a lot also depends on your driving style and braking habits...also, be sure to have them rotated frequently as that really helps them last longer.

Well actually you may think that way about Dubai, but in all honesty these garages do not have the professional technicians nor the quality. They have a porsche workshop but its only for the porsche sports cars not cayennes.

Yep im not falling for that ''porsche approved'' theory thats why Im ordering the tyres from a private tyre store where i have been ordering tyres for all my vehicles for years and he always give me a very good price. They were charging me US$1250 for 4 tyres, which I dont know sounds pretty expensive.

Ace but the thing is if the tyres are not approved by porsche then they wont renew my warranty. Whats worse is that I have to renew my warranty every ****ing year apart the 2 year warranty since March 2006 when i bought the car new.

Sometimes you have to compromise owning such great cars. When I renewed my Mercedes's and bwms I had no problems and they give me a 5 year warranty one time payment.

I understand...I bought my extended warranty from a 3rd arty company and don't have to deal with Porsche trying to rip me off...so far my extended coverage has worked very well and they paid for all things that needed attention.
