Custom bypass pipes??

Instead of buying pre fabricated bypass pipes, can I just have my exhaust guy cut/unbolt the old secondary cats and replace w/ a straight pipe of same size diamter? Its cheaper and seems simple.

By doing it custom, is there something I should consider before doing this?

I might replace the exhaust later, but I just wanted to open up a bit of sound right now.

Thanks,

Bojan

If I were you, I'd just order a set of bypass pipes, no need to worry...

Yeah I know.. but i mean its just a pipe right? Nothing special to it, unless I'm confused. Let me know guys, I'm going to the shop tomorrow to have them do it. Just want to make sure there are no precautions necessary such as wires or oxygen sensors etc.

I would buy the bypass pipes, I dont think its worth it to spend more time fabricating the oems when there is an existing product available in the market.

I just ordered a set from Ebay, about 1/2 the price. I'm the same way, it is just a pipe. Some exhaust work such as headers take a lot of time, skill and testing, but I just can't justify it for a Cat Bypass pipe. The reason I did not just go to a muffler shop was the fact that I like to be able to go back to stock if I (more importantly my wife since it is her truck) don't like it. I will post my findings on the "cheap" ebay versions.

Just one piece of advice... from what I understand you should make sure your bypass pipes have hangers vs. just free hanging pipe.

Ok...so I went to a local welding/exhaust shop and they wouldn't touch it. Say its illegal to remove cats?? It seems true, but these are secondary cats. Does that make any difference? How did people get theirs on their car.., some must have installed them at a shop. And if so, how come they didn't bring that up?

Secondary cat removal should not be an issue if I have been informed properly, just go to another shop- Preferably one that is more performance oriented.
This mod is next on my list, just ordered K/N air filters.

I had custom bypass pipes done on my M5 and it cost very little. Just make sure you go to a shop that can do mandrel bends and uses high quality SS tubing. I will be doing the same to my Cayenne shortly. Paying $400 - $500 for a small flanged pipe with hangers seems a little silly to me.

I guess you can pay for convenience though.
