test driving a GTS Manual on the 9th
#32
I bought a GTS with tiptronic because the traffic in DC gets to be pretty
bad and driving a stick in heavy traffic would be a drag.
Just wondering was the GTS that Cp4s drove broken in? I noticed that
after driving mine for about 2500 miles the power started to increase pretty
drastically. At first I was kind of disappointed but by 3000 miles I was saying WOW!
A huge improvement over my 04 CS.
Also, I noticed that a lot of 911 drivers have the Cayenne or are interested in them. Is
the Porsche community more accepting of the Cayenne now? Back when I bought my 04
I was pretty much scoffed at, now it seems to be a little more palatable to the hard
core Porsche drivers.

i don't get into the daily traffic issues but i hear you.
what are the shift points on the tip?
in this manual - 1st is about 40km hr: 2nd 80km hr; 3rd i think about 120km hr.
those are around 6k rpm points.
do you find yourself driving in the 4k rpm to 6k rpm a lot?

On some of the winding roads, I am usually in the 3.5 - 5.5 k range, which is where the GTS takes off. The torque is very linear, with steady acceleration,
unlike the turbo, which there is some lag, then it comes on all at once. Much
more usable power I would say and so much fun to drive.
The shift points I will have to get back to you on. I drive it using the rocker switches on the stairing wheel and I'm usually winding it out. In automatic mode, which is in traffic, I'm usually moving too slow for it to shift out of second gear...

Hi Cpa4S, just wanted to check with you what your rpms are when crusing in 6th gear at around 130km or ~ 80mph. My 996 is just a tad below 3000rpm at 130km. Is it noisy on the hwyway? How's your l/100k now? That's something I need to confirm as I plan to own this in the long run. Thanks in advance.

2 weeks into the GTS - at 130km about 3,200rpm (i'll double check tomorrow) and it is quiet; both road noise and tranny. i am off the loaner and into mine which has the thermal glass so road noise is reduced even more. it will be very nice on a long road trip.
the mileage on this one as ii break it in, so trying to keep under 4k rpm has really improved over the loaner. i am getting 14.5 l/100km or so. i am impressed. when breakin is over i think that consumption will change, but at least it showed that cruising around town with low shift points - but still 100% of the time in sport - mileage can be good.

the final drvie ratio on the manual is much higher then the Tip. so comparo's are tricky.
i wish they had spread the 5th to 6th a lot more and turned 6th into an overdrive concept.

Thanks guys. I think I can live with 3200rpm at 80mph. As I am considering a stick, Cpa4S's numbers will be closest to what I am looking for. 14.?? l/100k is not too bad either. My 994 c4 is getting somewhere between 13 and 14 l/100k. So I think the high rpm and gas milage scrare is not as bad as I thought it would be.

try more like 19l per 100 for the manual.
the extra 5l/100 is well worth it in this GTS.
the Porsche is a riot.

if you are thinking about something else when driving you can shift all the way to 4th and not even notice you have been shifting the thing!
2nd to 3rd is a really nice throw.
