Roof Rack Question

I will be taking the Cayenne on a road trip and need the extra storage space. I'm confused. Do I need both the roof rails AND the transport system rails (the bars that go across the roof)? Or do the bars that go across the roof attached into tracks on top of the car? I will only need it for this one trip so I don't want to put a lot of money into it. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

it attaches to tracks on top of the cayenne. roof rails are waste of money imo.

I am selling a set of roof rails - Thule load bars with ski racks. You can purchase them directly from me and save shipping or from the listing on Ebay for $25 more.

link is:
Thule Car Top Ski Racks with Load Bars - eBay (item 190238226251 end time Jul-24-08 11:54:16 PDT)

You can also put any Thule attachments on the roof rails such as bike racks, kyak racks, roof box....etc.

If you're interested, you can pay through PayPal and I'll ship Monday.

Very interesting! I have a Thule rack in the attic that I haven't used in several years. I'll check if the feet will fit. If not it may be worth buying your set, although I don't ski.

Super. Just let me know. The base unit alone is $369 plus tax plus the ski racks. You could always sell or trade the ski racks - they're the rage you know

You talking about the roof side rails or the ones that go across the vehicle? With the side rails, you can attach ANY rack system you'd ever want. Considering most current SUVs are forcing buyers to use only their proprietary rack systems, this roof side rails on the Cayenne were actually a major selling point for me.

thats exactly why the side rails are a waste! You have to buy siderails then a rack set that goes across.

If you buy only the roof transport system(the cross bars), you can attach ski/snowboard, bike carrier, boat carrier and the roof cargo box WITHOUT the side rails.

The proprietary branded ski/storage (ie. Porsche, Land Rover, etc....) is utter garbage. Trust me. Not only is totally over priced, and usually 5-10 behind at a technological standpoint, but one you are limited to what comes out for that particular vehicle....which usually only has one item per category...bike, ski, one roof box. Its also not interchangeable between different makes of vehicles. Also, you cannot fold down the ski rack when driving into parking garages etc. With a Yakima style rack, you can push them down for extra clearance, or for gas mileage. With the Porsche ski racks system, they are stuck in the upright position.

Ever see an X5 or another current SUV with the ancient cross ski rack system (that fit only skis prior to 1995)? Just try to fit even the most beginner/skinniest ski on there....good luck. Its a waste of plastic.

With the rails, you can put any combo you like. A storage box with ski rack, one large ski/snowboard rack, ski and bike, just bikes, surfboards...etc...and you can choose from anything Thule/Yakima/etc sells. And only takes a few minutes to take off. Best part, I can swap pieces between the Cayenne and my Audi wagon. Road tripping? I'll put the cargo box on the Cayenne. Taking people on a mountain bike trip? No problem, just put those on whatever car you want to take.

I bring this up so people get the most of their SUVs....

If you just ski then ur rails and yakima ski rack crap is good.
For me, just my roof transport racks carries my mountain bike, kayak, snowboard and storage bin. show me a set yakima racks that can do all that.
if i want less drag and better clearence then ill just take them off. it only takes 30 secs.
