cayenne vs. X6 BMW
#3
I looked at the X6 as soon as it was released, but the extremely poor rear visibilty, inability to seat 5 passengers, and lack of a manual transmission got it crossed off my list. The price for a loaded top-line X6 was about $5,000 less than my well-equipped-but-not-loaded Cayenne GTS. The lower-end X6 model did appear to be a pretty good value compared to a Cayenne S or to a heavily equipped base Cayenne.
I find the exterior styling of the X6 to be quite unattractive (but then again, lots of people don't like the Cayenne, either). In the X6's defense, it didn't look as bad to me in person as it did in photos, but it seems like a design that will not age well. And the build quality appeared to be excellent, as one would expect, but I don't particularly care for the interior design of the newer BMWs. While the Cayenne may not be a true beauty to most, at least the styling is a bit more timeless.
My buddy had even a harsher review of the X6: "What IS that thing? That's just stupid!" (But I'm sure my loud and rumbling orange GTS beast invokes similar responses from some people.) Still, there's no denying that BMW builds great vehicles. But it seems like the X6 may be an answer to a question that nobody asked.

The lease on my X5 4.8is ended and I considered both the X6 and the Cayenne. I drove both and I went with the Cayenne for all the reasons that Pugman and his buddy point out: interior design including passenger capacity, visibility, styling (personal preference) in addition to the fact that the Cayenne's build quality to me seems just a half step above the BMW. I enjoyed my X5, but in my opinion, brand new out of the box the Cayenne build quality nudges out either BMW.
Probably can't go wrong with either, but I prefer the Cayenne.
