21 Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow or 21 Toyo Proxes S/T ???
Hi guys,
I know I already posted a topic on winters tires but I'd like your opinions, answers and feedback on the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow versus to the Toyo Proxes S/T.
I read several online reviews on the 21 Pirelli and in general reviews were good. Good tires on snow and for the winter.
A member of the forum replied to my other topic and shared his experience with the Pirelli. He said they are not good tires, especially in the wet. He mentioned slip and severe understeer during hard cornering.
On the other hand, he stated that the Toyo Proxes S/T are excellent tires in the wet and superb handling on dry (he compared them to Toyo T1R).
Although I am looking for good winter tires, I am also looking to have superior handling in the wet. I live in the Northeast and commute between Montreal and Boston several times during the winter. We don't only have snow, it rains a lot and roads are wet most of the time (snow melt).
Basically, I wish to drive fast on the highway when it's wet.
So, I guess I am looking for tires for 25% snow use and 75% wet use.
Should I just go for the Toyo since they are all season and are great in wet or stick with the Pirelli (since it's a winter tire) and switch with the stock tires.
Thank ahead of time!

I'm running 20" Toyo Proxes S/T in summer and 18" Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow in winter.
If you have no heavy snow to worry about, then Toyo Proxes all the way. Great dry and wet handling. I've done some high speed driving in the dry and wet in the Toyo and have a lot of confidence in them. I have not try them on heavy snow and cannot comment on its snow performance.

I have the Toyo S/T's on my 20's. I cannot find a fault with these tires. I am not planning on driving in the snow, so I do not have any feedback on that.

i have no complaints with my 21 pirellis in very snowy/cold conditions.
i was initially worried as everyone on the board says 18s are optimal
i would recommend the snow tires if the temperatures drop below 0 Celsius often
i heard it was the law in Quebec that all cars must have winter tires (i might be wrong) so i assume the conditions are bad there
i cant speak to the toyo's as i have never used

I'm rolling on 19" Pirelli Scorpion ICE & Snows now and my initial comments are:
1-) Increased ride quality compared to my Continental All season tires
2-) Kinda better handling on snowy and icy pavement.
3-) Worse cornering. I got angry at someone and floored the pedal while cornering, and they slipped. I used to do the same move before with my continental all season tires and they used to handle much better.
4-) Increased in-cabin noise, but relatively speaking. You can't really tell there are winter tires or summer tires there..

Yes, it is now the law in Quebec to have winter tires but my car is registered in the US
Thanks for the feedback.

How high are you talking about? The Pirelli's never became 'nervous' up to about 100mph...though I'd never do that in the rain with them.

If you are at all worried about snow performance (with this winter in Mass, can't blame you), definitely go for the Pirelli's. They perform excellently in the snow and can take decent speeds (I believe they are V rated?).
If you want an all-season tyre then go with the Toyo. It will suffer in any heavy snow accumulation though. I usually reccomend all client's with Cayennes to run the winter tyres and then have the summers for nice weather. Makes the truck unstoppable for any condition it faces. Hope this helps.
