My Michelins on the 06 CTTS leave black marks on the concrete at the end of the driveway where I turn into the driveway. I turn into the driveway the exact same way as I have for 9 years in X5s riding on different Michelins. The X5s never left marks. So the rubber must be softer and/or wear more rapidly on the Cayenne.

Are you guys seeing the front tires, near the outer wall, wearing faster than the rears on stock 20s or 21s? Dealer said that my tires are at 50% (yellow on their Porsche inspection checklist), but the outer fronts are more worn than anywhere else (faint tread remaining on outer part vs. rest of the tire).

that seems little strange, since the outer edge shouldn't be wearing out faster like that, unless your front tires aren't properly inflated, or have a positive camber setting.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. New 2008 GTS owner here, just picked up a Private Party CPO'd one with just over 15K on the clock... previous owner noted the tire wear, and we dealed accordingly, but this wear appears to be abnormal (even after the Porsche inspection).

Hmm.. maybe the previous owner didn't keep them properly inflated...? However, the TPMS was showing 40 in front, 50 in back yesterday for GTS stock 21"s tires so should be okay now.

Could be a positive camber (tipping the tire to the outside shoulder), but with air suspension and pdcc, you would think that it would be right on. Recent Porsche service didn't note any irregularities in their opinion.

Drove on straight roads all day yesterday and car appears to be perfectly aligned. So... not sure. Maybe take to another dealer. Tires do have about 11K on them (22"s were on there for about 4K miles), and from what I've been reading these cars are notorious for poor tire wear, so who knows.

I'll take some pics tonight and post. Thanks again.

I wonder...... if the previous owner had swapped the FR (front right) <-> FL (front left) and RR (rear right) <-> RL(rear left) tires to squeeze out few more miles on the set of tires? (my brain is thinking, probably not, but I couldn't think of anything else...)

I'm going to start swapping the rears on my 996 from side to side. It's getting only replacing tires every 7k miles. Especially when it's just that inside inch and the rest of the tire looks great.

Pics

That would have made sense, pcst, but it looks like he never got to that point. ??

- Both the RL and RR tires' treads look good (the inside shoulder, middle, and outside have ample tread).

- The FL tire's tread is showing more wear on the outside than the inside or middle, and the FR tire's tread outside is even worse than the FL.

The pictures below show Right Side Tires, 1 Pics of the Rear, 2 Pics of the Front (Top view and outside shoulder)... following reply shows Left Side Tires (Rear and Front, same format).

Tire rotation is clearly in order here, but am curious to see what could be causing this... also, anyone want to venture a guess at how many miles I might have on those front tires (particularly the FR)?

Pics (Right Side)

Pics of the right side are below... you'll see that the FR tread on the outside is worse than the FL, but both are worse than the rears (that appears to be common from what I've been reading on here).

BTW, thanks in advance for the input... I know that I'm a newbie, but do appreciate the feedback. Dealer up in Nor Cal didn't red flag that tires needed to be immediately replaced during their inspection, but nonetheless, I want to minimize potential problems before they get worse.

Excited to finally get myself into a GTS, plan to hang around here for quite a while...

deputydog,

Hopefully I can do the same thing to the fronts and get more mileage out of them. Can't believe how much tires cost for the stock 21's.

Thanks for the pictures.

Just FYI, my 20" tires don't look dramatically different when comparing all 4 corners, but I've also noticed that one of the corner wore out more than others.

Thanks pcst!

Well, maybe I'm a bit over-concerned, and the previous owner didn't keep them properly inflated or rotated them enough. I would imagine a properly rotation and balance should keep me from buying 1-2 new ones for another 8K or so.

I'll probably inquire with a local dealer about the wear anyhow, as I also need them to check on my driver side mirror which is "wavy/blurry" compared to the left side and rearview ones (to the point that in certain areas you see double or triple images closely together. That can't be normal.

If anyone has other thoughts on the tires, feel free to chime in as well...

cordsig79 has a spectacular aura aboutcordsig79 has a spectacular aura about
I have a base cayenne with the 17's I bought in 06 and wasted thousands of dollars on new tires and all the tire shop warranties my first year because I put 47000 miles in 12 months on my car.....

I now buy used/stolen tires from the neighborhood tire shop here.........why?

They dont upsell me on anything....its 40 bucks for a Michelin Green ASX 23565R17 with 90% tread.......

I have a knack for nails and go through 4-6 tires a year with picking up road debris.......if they cant patch it.....40 more bucks for a new/used tire....

Its close to home, they are honest and dont try to sell me a warranty they will back out of later because of the tread wear looks like it was "under inflated".....(any firestone shop)...trust me I gave 5 years of my money and loyalty to them.....it took one trip to my used tire repair shop to know I am getting hosed.

i have never had a blow out from these tires and they wont sell repaired tires on the intial tire....they will only patch it 2-3 times too......so when I look at these new/used tires.....I can only assume they are stolen bc they sell those Michelins for 250 bucks a pop...and I get'em for 40......

I see the neighbors Bently Continential there too, getting tires...........
