2004 Cayenne Turbo Q
Hi Fellas,
I am a noob to this car. Since there is no sticky thread for Cayenne, I have to ask the questions here.
When I purchase a Turbo, what kind of questiosn should I ask the seller? There are few recall issues that I have read after I did some search.
How reliable is the car?
I think most Cayenne Turbos are daily drivers.
what's the maintenance cost to keep the car running on a yearly base(include repair bills and out of warranty cost)?
thank you all in advance

no 2 cars are the same, so reliability depends on the cars history and ownership.
again the maintenence depends on how the car has been treated (apart from standard interval services) you could have no issues apart from the usual brake pads/discs, or you could have loads of component failures, its really as vauge as that.
on my 2005 turbo, i have had to replace the discs and pads all round, and both front door window regulators, apart from that she has been very reliable, but i change oil etc every 3,000 miles (just me)
my friend who has a 2004 3.6 has issues all the time, but his car had a hard life.
you pays your money and takes your chance.

I agree with your post, I have to take my chances.

My best friend just bought a 04TT high mileage but in excellent condition. Dealer serviced, maint. up-to-date, newer tires, one owner. The mileage is so high that all the stuff that would go wrong has all been addressed and repaired. It's been about a month now and I've driven it ~650 miles HARD with no issues.

dont let people put you off...............
i dont know the ratio, but i would think there are thousands of good ones to every bad one.
as porsche is an "afleuent brand" most people who can afford one, can also afford the upkeep, so there not normally, not looked after.

a motor dealer friend of mine loves high milage quality cars as he said if its got that sort of milage on it...then it must be a "good car", and i suppose there is some logic in that.

I purchased a 04 Cayenne TT last year, sold it exactly a year later. I loved the car.. everything worked fine except for the transmission. So when you test drive it, make sure you have smooth up/down shifts. My rig would SLAM into gear. It started softly.. but over time got so bad that I had to drive it in manual mode to try and control the shifts. Turns out the 04s have faulty valve bodys under the transmission. And if that doesn't fix it (about $2K) then you have to replace the transmission (about $7-8K).
The worst part about it is that they can't tell you for sure if its the valve body. So you have to replace that part 1st.. and if it doesn't fix it then open the wallet for a transmission. I traded in my car.. let the dealer know what was up with it since hes my buddy. I didn't want to risk paying for a valve body and then have the same problem.
Long story short.. check to see if it drives smooth. From what I read, this is primarily a 04 concern. By the way, I purchased it with 45K miles.. so pretty insane that it went out that early in its life.

my friend ows an independant porsche dealership, specalising in performance work (paramount in slough uk)
he said its so important to change the transmittion fluid on tiptronic porsches, he recons 99% of all transmittion faults are due to the oil loosing its viscosity, the bands get so hot it can "cook" the oil making it loose all its properties.
he said the engine can surge (like a clutch car slipping) very jerky snatching shifts and holding there revs before changing gears.
change the fluid and filter for seemless smooth shifts every 40,000 miles.
regardless of what the dealers say....you change your engine oil often so why skip on the trans oil just because they say its not needed....they dont drive our pride and joy.
