adding tow package cost

looking to pick a used cayenne to tow my car to the track. Wondering what it might cost to add tow package, in case I find one w/out? And or anyone suggest someone in LA/SFV to install it. thanks!

I posed this question to the dealer where I just put a deposit on an 04. They told me it was a difficult job requiring removal of rear bumper to install. quoted around 1400 parts and labor. Said you can't just go to uhaul and have them install any old hitch. Something to due with the resistors in the wiring and setting of alarms in your car. Not sure how much of this is true just passing on what was told to me from a dealer. Hope that helps.

having worked on porsches myself, I really don't think it's that tough of a task. My thinking is that once you have the rear bumper off, it's pretty simple from there.

It really depends on how badly you need the tow hitch. If you really must have it, then I would not buy a Cayenne without it. Good thing is a lot of the used ones I've seen have them...in other words...it's not rare.

Here are the instructions and also one for sale on ebay. Good luck.

fly thanks let me know. Neil thanks as well looks easy enough, but then still have the lights and brake controller to worry about it? Think I might leave this one to the pro's?

Just a bunch of dealer BS, U-haul did it for me in 3 hours for $430.

Last night I installed a curt hitch myself (w/ help from my 7 year old daughter) on my '04S...an easy 2 hour job. I only need the hitch for bike and ski rack - so no harness for towing - but the wiring is beyond my abilities, so I'd trust that to the dealer or skilled indy. I think others have gone this route to save $s...I recall seeing some posts here or on rennlist.

curio nicely done.

I'd make sure who ever you have do the job has done it before. No sense making more trouble for yourself down the road.

FYI, there is a lot more to the factory hitch than just a receiver...It also includes a towing module that links in with other systems on the Cayenne like the transmission unit to modify shifts for towing. I think it also adjust the auto leveling with air suspension units, and ties in the wiring plug to the alarm system so that if the trailer is disconnected with the alarm active it will sound the horn. I also notice it has separate turning signal indicators for the trailer in the instrument cluster that are activated with the towing module. You will also get the famous "!" alert if any of the bulbs are not working. There might be other stuff too but that is what I know of. David

Yes it is more involved. I had it done at the factory on our CS. There is something with the ecu also as mentioned. The turn signals function with the lights plugged in, etc...

yeah I appreciate what curio saying since I was thinking of going the uhaul route myself, but wonder if they just do some weld job using whatever hitch they stock to make fit, instead of using the actual cayenne hitch Neil mentioned, requiring bumper removal etc. Also do the tie into the porsche ecu etc. Hmmm? Hoping I find one with tow package already. Kicking myself for not buying Cplavins that was listed a week or so back. White lowered, wheels, tow and nav done. Oh well

I have one on the back of my wife's cayenne, and I never use it, nor will I ever. I would sell mine if you needed one.
