Who has used 22-inches wheels for the longterm?
Hi everyone,
I'm currently shopping for 22s for my Cayenne. I don't drive a lot, and when I do it's on relatively well-kept roads. I've already done tons of searches on 22s and cracking, and many people have chimed in with their "horror" cracked-wheel experiences.
So I wanted to hear from those of you that have used 22s for a while now with success. How long have you had the 22s on, and what type of wheel is it. Also, what brand/size tire are you running?
Thanks everyone!

I used to have 335/25/22 on 11.5" and 295/30/22 on 22x10 3 piece wheels on 2009 GTS with Techart lowering module - firm ride and rim bent in different spots, even with careful driving. finally blew one of the 335/25/22 on a pothole not too long. have recently switched to 305/35/22 Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas, the ride is so much smoother and hoping that with more rubber, the rims will do better. Very slight rubbing when on low level and the wheels are turned all the way, but other than that, very happy with it.

I did have 22" Techarts on my 2004 CTT...for one day! Went over a road cut on the way home from the installer and bent three of them - seriously a road cut - which to me is stupid. I got NO sympathy from Techart however, it is what it is. 21" for me is the largest I would be running with but only my experience...and besides, I find 21" looks best given the mass or the Cayenne in my opinion.

HaHa!
OK, we were supposed to discuss SUCCESS stories!
Actually failures are welcome too; this will probably be good to read and attach all to one thread. But please don't forget to mention your tire size. If I go 22s, I'm hoping the higher profile tires will trend towards being safer.
So anyone else? Success and failures at which tire size?
Thank, everyone!

I had 22s on mine with Nitto tires. 285/35/22. Ride was ok, handling was better. I loved the look of 22s but had to switch to 20s. I had a flat and couldn't find a shop right away that can handle 22s. I can't imagine what a pain it would have been it it had happen during one of our long trips we take every year. The setup I bought is about the same diameter as stock 18s so I would imagine I can use the spare in the event I get a flat in the middle of nowhere.
For success, looks good, handles great and the forged wheels were strong enough to take on Jersey Pot holes (i'm very careful though). If I didn't drive the Cayenne on long trips, I would have kept my 22s.

Have had 22" NC Forged Wheels with 285/35 Michelin's since new on 2005 Turbo. One bent barrel a couple of years ago and that is it. BTW, this is the same damage rate I have had with OEM wheels on Mercedes, BMW, and Porsche so I am pleased.

I had 22s for 6 months with 285/35/22. Ride was fine and never had any probs. Now I'm on 23s because the 22s just didn't look big enough. 315/25/23 and the ride is the same. Over a year and no cracks, bends etc. I am careful ( you have to be). I've always had big wheels and low pro tires on every car I've owned so I'm used to it. I think the horror stories about 22s are a bit exaggerated. If your roads are attrocious then it might not be a good idea. Our roads here are good but u still need to look out for potholes. They look great and handling is much improved but off roading is not advised

i had 22 for about a year. they were rinspeed 22x10. i live in LA and did not have any problems with cracking. however, the ride was definitely different from my stock 21 GTS wheels. what made it work was the air suspension which allowed me to set it in comfort mode. i also had the pressure slightly lower as well. i would agree that 21 was a lot better overall, despite my success 22 story.

Yay! Success stories!
Cole, Trovan, and Matrix:
What size tires did you run?
I'm glad to hear about the Rinspeed reps. Those are the wheels I'm leaning toward, and I was reading a few posts about those specific wheels cracking...
Thanks, again, everyone!

I run 22's in the summer months with Nitto 555 285/35's. They are a loud *** tire, but no other complaints really. Ride is stiffer than my winter 20's, but significantly better in the response and handling category.

i had TechArt Formulas in 22 on a 05 Cayenne S.
Put about 10k miles no issues at all. Sold to someone in S. Cali and he loved it but later bent some of the wheels. He said he was able to get it fixed. Holla. 22s are where it's at girl.
My wife will probably get 22s.
