Gear selector/Ignition problem?

My dad has been having an issue with his '08 Cayenne S. it seems like about 20-30% of the time he shuts the car off, the ignition doesn't let go of the key, and the instrument cluster reads "place car in park", even though the selector is in park. After a bit of 'fiddling' the ignition releases the key. I have only seen this once myself, and I made sure not to touch anything, and in about 15 seconds. The ignition clicked off and released the key on its own.

There have also been a few instances when attempting to start the car, it will not crank over. So it is the same issue, except it occurs after the car has sat for a while and was obviously in park, because the key was released when he previously stopped the car.

I have read a bit about people with a similar issue, though I haven't come across any definitive solution for it. I am very mechanically inclined, and I would like to fix this myself if it is something I could.

Thanks for your help.

Inspect the multifunction switch electrical connector located on the left side of the transmission for water migration. Other then that, it's best to have the system tested with Durametric/Porsche scan tool.
