Lets talk aftermarket warranties...

My 06 Turbo S CPO expires in less then two weeks. I dropped it off the final time at the dealer this morning to have them go over the car. I asked them what they recommend for aftermarket warrenties as I have read some horror stories online about different companies. The service advisor said he would have someone contact me to discuss.
I just wanted to see what other people have done after the CPO expired or what companies they use and how you like them. Here are a few questions I thought of.

Who did you go with?

How expensive was the warranty and what does it cover?

Do they cover everything they stated they would?

Are they easy to deal with or does it turn into a headache when trying to get them to reimburse you or the dealership?

Would you recommend them to someone else?

I know I should go with what the dealer recommends and uses as they should have a good relationship with that aftermarket warranty company but wanted to see what other people were using. I really like my 06 Turbo S and while I don’t put a ton of miles on it I know how expensive sensors and other little parts can be. So that is why I was looking to get an extended warranty after the CPO runs out.

Two points on aftermarket warranties:

1. The warranty company is betting your car will cost them less then you pay them. Guess who has the figures and knows how to deny coverage?

2. Aftermarket warranties typically have 100% markup. Meaning one you buy from the dealer for say $4,000 - the dealer makes $2,000 and the warranty company sees $2,000.

So - what'cha want to bet (because that's what you're doing) that your truck is a POS, and that you'll collect back the money (and more) that the warranty costs you?

Put $4,000 in the bank. Use it as needed for repairs. At the end of say 3 years, give me what remains. I wanna be just as rich as the warranty companies are.

My main concern is that something major goes wrong with the car, turbos, tranny, motor. Even sensors are expensive for this car so that is why I was looking into them. My car has 92K on it and I heard if the turbos go it is an 18k job to replace them.

You certainly run that risk with any car!

$18k Seems like a made up number to me. I've never heard of a CTT turbo going bad. I've replaced several sets on my twin turbo Audi and its about a $3500 job, including the turbos.

$18k to replace the turbos? No way in hell it costs that much!

I've had Fidelity on my Turbo and they've been excellent. I'm over $10k in repairs deep on it (alternator, oil cooler o-ring that required dropping the engine to replace it, and a new nav head unit) for their Platinum bumper-to-bumper warranty that cost $3500 for 4 years/48k miles with a $100 deductible. I haven't had any issues with getting them to pay. I haven't heard any complaints from anyone that has Fidelity either.

I spoke with Bruce Mendel. He's on several car forums, mainly Audi, and a lot of people go to him for extended warranties. He told me there weren't many good options for a Cayenne Turbo and the ones he was seeing were upwards of $10k so I just passed on it. 1 more yr left on my CPO at least.

That is what the local dealer Knoph quoted me if it had to be done. I made a thread a while back about a lot of oil in the driver side IC pipe. I ended up taking it to another dealer that showed me the bullitin from porsche saying it is a seal that goes bad and that is where the oil come from. The first dealer claimed the motor and tranny need to be pulled to get to the turbos on the car and I ask how expensive of a job it is to replace them and that was the number they gave me. When I heard that I wanted to drop over.

I would image that just like the Audi the motor has to come out. It's not as big of a deal as you may think though. It's all bolted to the subframe. So you basically just unplug the wires and drop the subframe with suspension and all connected.

I have a picture of one out. I'll see if I can find it and post it.

if an 08' ctt w/ just 32k miles that is out of factory warranty because it's over 4 yrs since it was purchased, what's the option on warranty? would the dealership still offer the factory extension or do i must purchase the aftermarket warranty?

I bought an extended warranty from my dealer when I purchased my Cayenne. I think it extended my factory warranty to 8 years or 80,000 miles. In my case, it was a waste of money. I never used it. Not once. I did end up having to replace my water pump and fuel pump after my extended warranty expired, but that's always the way these things work out. I also had a few repairs made while my Cayenne was still covered by the original manufacturer's warranty. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't purchased the extended warranty.

The dealer got back to me and said because it is a turbo s only one company would cover it and they wanted 7K for a 2 year 24,000 mile warrenty. I think I am going to have to pass on that one.

CPO is done this month... Fidelity pricing as below, hmmm, took alot longer to post this message than to give the extended warranty any consideration. Guess I'll be going forward without a net, so that means it's time for a mod or two Think i'll start with diverters and cold air intake, but first I need to go and happily re-read a all the posts on mod's and lay out a game plan.

from the dealer ....
Please note estimates for Fidelity warranty- same warranty as Porsche
1 year or 12,000 miles $6,999.00
2 years or 24,000 miles $9,899.00
3 years or 36,000 miles $12,999.00
4 years or 48,000 miles $17,999.00

For that kind of money I would just find a couple guys with CTTS's that are out of warranty, pool your money and start your own warranty company. Matter of fact, that sounds like something that could benefit many makes. This could be the start of 6speed extended warranties. Just think of how easy it would be to find parts cars.

LOL yeah I called Porsche yesterday and they use Fidelity as well. They quoted for my 05 CTT with 64k miles the below..

Platinum package which is like bumper to bumper:

3 year 36k miles $9100 $100 deductible
4 year 48k miles $12300 $100 deductible

I save my money in a bank account and fix as needed.. just pray a tranny or motor does mess up

for those who decided not to buy extended/additional warranty - what did you do just before your warranty runs out? Did you bring it to the dealer/independent shop to do a thorough checkup just before you go bare? What did you specifically tell them to look out for?
